A Rather Chaotic Drama
18 October 2004 | by See all my reviews

This action-filled but rather chaotic short drama was one of Biograph's features that high-lighted various professions. In this particular movie, which is set in a tunnel being dug, the characters all seem to have a lot on their minds, and some of their actions and decisions don't make a whole lot of sense. It's of some interest for the setting and some of the cinematography, but as a story it is probably not as good as a lot of other Biograph shorts of the era.

Most of the film focuses on the growing antagonism between the project superintendent and his foreman. The two actors clearly communicate their characters' dislike for one another, but some of the issues are handled a little clumsily, and neither character comes off either as being all that bright or as particularly worth caring about.

The one reason to see it would be for the footage taken at one of the actual tunnels being dug under the Hudson River. Those sequences give it a little historical interest. Perhaps with more advanced story-telling techniques, it could have been more effective as a complete movie. As it is, it might have a couple of good points, but it is just not very good overall.
