Top 10 WWE Wrestlers of 2017

Liam Hoofe with his countdown of the 10 best WWE superstars of 2017…

2017 has been an interesting time to be a wrestling fan. The year started off with a controversial Royal Rumble victory for Randy Orton (spoiler alert: he’s not on this list), made us all cry our eyes out when The Undertaker took his last ride at WrestleMania 33, and then left all of our jaws on the floor when Jinder Mahal was crowned WWE champion.

So in a year which has featured Jinder as WWE champion, the debut of the house of horrors match and the return of The Great Khali, which wrestlers have been a shining beacon of hope for us fans? The roster is arguably more talented than it has ever been, and from an in-ring perspective, the company has had one of its most consistent years to date. We’ve seen the rise, and fall of many new stars,

Wrestling Daily News Roundup – Possible Main Event for The Royal Rumble, Chris Jericho Attacks Kenny Omega, Brock Lesnar Movie Role?

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

Main Event for The Royal Rumble

In the main event of last night’s Raw [read our review here], Kane fought Braun Strowman to determine the new number 1 contender for the Universal Championship. The bout, which was disappointing, ending in a double count-out for both men, meaning that it is still unclear as to who The Beast will face at the Rumble.

Many people online, however, are speculating that Braun Strowman and Kane will both face Brock Lesnar in a triple threat match at the Rumble. While this would be a nice way of protecting Braun, it seems crazy to think that Kane could be in a PPV main event, competing for a top title in 2018, while the likes of Finn Balor sit on the sidelines. Stranger things have happened, though, and this definitely looks like the way they are moving forward.

WWE Raw Review 11/12/17 – Kane Takes on Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns Defends his Intercontinental Title, More Woken Matt Hardy

Liam Hoofe reviews this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw

This week’s Raw opened with Samoa Joe standing in the ring addressing Roman Reigns. Joe is scheduled to face Ambrose later in the night but says it is Roman he wants. He runs down all three members of The Shield, bragging about putting Rollins out of action, and choking Reigns out last week, he says that Ambrose has just been hiding from him this whole time.

We see Rollins and Ambrose watching the TV backstage, Rollins tells Dean that they need to get ‘The Big Dog’ in one of the cringiest lines of the night. Reigns shows up and says he’s got this. Reigns heads to the ring and him and Joe begin brawling. The Bar attack Reigns as well and Joe locks in the clutch. The Shield runs out for the save but they get beaten

Wrestling Daily News Roundup -Woken Matt Hardy has arrived!, Big Match Set for Next Week’s Raw, 205 Live Heading on the Road

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

Matt Hardy is #Woken!

After months of waiting, and a week full of speculation, Matt Hardy finally unveiled his ‘Woken’ Gimmick on this week’s edition of Monday Night Raw. Despite concerns from fans, it does appear as though the WWE is going all out with the gimmick, simply changing the name from Broken to Woken and presumably leaving everything else as it is.

Hardy debuted the character during a highly amusing segment with Bray Wyatt, spouting some nonsense about Plato, Cleopatra, and his journey through time and space. The live crowd on Raw ate it up, as did fans on social media. A feud with Bray seems like a logical first step for the character in the WWE, and who knows, maybe it can even manage to make Bray interesting again.

Wrestling Daily News Roundup – Big Name Released From the WWE, Broken Matt Coming Sooner than Expected, Rumoured Matches for Next Year’s Royal Rumble

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

Big Name Released From the WWE

According to various sources, including Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer live, Jim Johnston, the man behind so many iconic wrestling themes, has been released from the company after three decades.

This news is particularly surprising, and also quite sad. Johnston was, for many fans, an integral part of the company for the last 30 years, and he effectively crafted the soundtrack for many of our childhoods. His work in the attitude era was something that really helped get me invested in the WWE and its characters.

Johnston’s release will be a big surprise to many, and he is a much-loved figure backstage in the WWE. With Wrestlemania around the corner, there will no doubt be a push for him to be inducted into next year’s Hall of Fame, and rightfully so.

Wrestling Daily News Roundup – Broken Matt On His Way to the WWE?, Stable Name for Paige’s Group Revealed, Drew McIntyre Update, Women’s Elimination Chamber Match?

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

Broken Matt Finally on his Way to the WWE?

Ever since making his surprise return to the WWE at Wrestlemania this year, fans have been desperate to see Matt Hardy embrace his stupidly popular ‘Broken’ gimmick. The gimmick was a huge success for Hardy in Tna and helped the company gain a huge following this time last year.

When Hardy left the company, however, Tna claimed that they held the copyright to the gimmick, and Matt and the brand have been locked in a legal war ever since. Well, it finally looks as though we are going to see a breakthrough. According to PWInsider, there has been a huge development. Apparently, on December 19th, the trademark will be published for opposition, giving any party 30 days the chance to seize the gimmick for themselves. With Tna currently at a bit of a loose end,

Wrestling Daily News Roundup – The Undertaker Return Rumours, Starrcade to Return Next Year? Woman’s Royal Rumble Update

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

Starrcade To Return Next Year?

This past Saturday night, WWE hosted their first ever Starrcade event in Greensboro, Nc. The show was a Smackdown branded event and featured the one-off returns of many wrestling legends including Arn Anderson and The Rock N Roll Express. Dustin Rhodes also dropped his Goldust gimmick for the night, paying tribute to his father, Dusty, the man responsible for the first ever Starrcade event.

While many fans were left frustrated that Starrcade was not broadcast on the WWE network, the event did draw a large crowd in Greensboro, North Carolina, one which is said to be their largest in the area in quite some time, prompting many fans to wonder whether the event will be brought back.

Well, according to PWInsider, that is the plan, with the WWE already discussing bringing the event back for

Wrestling Daily News Roundup – Former WWE Champion Wants Full Time Return, Brock Lesnar’s Royal Rumble Opponent Aj Styles’ Contract, Rumoured Card For Clash of Champions

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

Former Champion Wants Full-Time Return

Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Batista revealed on Jr’s podcast this week that he would definitely consider a full time return to the WWE in the near future, going as far as to reveal that he is has been in contact with Vince McMahon in the very recent past. He said ‘I don’t want to do a one-off. I want to go and I want to wrestle. I want to do some house shows. I want to be a part of the program and I love it. The one-off thing, the cheap pop thing, it doesn’t do anything for me.’

Batista’s most recent return to the company was in 2014, where he won the Royal Rumble went on to main-event Wrestlemania, and then reformed Evolution for a brief period to take on The Shield.

Wrestling Daily News Roundup: Major Change to Money in the Bank, PPVs Axed, Kurt Angle Vs John Cena?, Becky Lynch Update

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

Changes Made to Money in the Bank, Full 2018 PPV Schedule

For some time now, WWE fans have considered Money in the Bank as one of the year’s big shows. The PPV calendar traditionally highlights Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Summerslam, and Survivor Series as the company’s biggest four shows of the year, and they are the only four shows to feature both Raw and Smackdown brands competing. Well, according to PWInsider, it was revealed yesterday that Money in the Bank 2018 will also be a dual branded event, indicated that the WWE are beginning to treat it as one of their big shows.

The news was revealed alongside the full 2018 WWE PPV schedule, which features several other interesting changes. The first thing you may notice is that the company has trimmed their schedule from 16 shows to 14, which are made up of 5 dual branded,

Wrestling Daily News Roundup: Triple H’s Wrestlemania Opponent, Huge Return on Raw, Royal Rumble Main Event Plans, Landmark for Roman Reigns

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

Triple H’s Wrestlemania Opponent

The ending of Survivor Series was an absolute mess, I think most wrestling fans would agree on that. While it could be argued that the match was booked as to get Braun Strowman over, most of us can agree that once again, Triple H stole the limelight.

Wrestlemania feuds are often started at Survivor Series, though, and with Triple H screwing pretty much everybody in this bout, and then having a confrontation with Braun Strowman- fans were left a little bit confused as to who his Mania opponent would be. Rumoured opponents for Hunter have been Shane or Kurt Angle in recent months, and with him attacking both of these men at Survivor Series, things still remain unclear.

The rumours circulating today are that Triple H will face both Braun Strowman and Kurt Angle (sorry,

Comic Book Review- WWE Survivor Series Special #1

Liam Hoofe reviews Boom! Comics WWE Survivor Series Special…

Back in August, when I reviewed Boom! Studios’ WWE SummerSlam Special, I finished the review by stating that I hoped the company would continue to provide these little nostalgia filled editions for each of the big events. The ‘big four’ wrestling events – Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series – all have a rich history, one that is ripe to be explored in the pages of a comic book. Survivor Series, the final big four events of the year, is perhaps the most interesting to explore. The event has become synonymous with surprises, debuts, big returns and of course, screw jobs.

Boom! Studios has lovingly crafted six such stories for their first Survivor Series special, exploring big events from the company’s past. Have they done these tales justice though? Let’s take a look…

The Montreal Screwjob

WrestleForce: Wickford (21/10/17) – Results & Review

WrestleForce is a great way to see live professional wrestling in the UK, with upcoming events every week in Essex. I attended the latest event at the Wick Community Centre in Wickford, which despite the small venue manage to create quite an atmosphere with a sell-out crowd.

The layout of the venue means that the crowd are sectioned onto one side of the ring, but with the limited capacity of the venue, you feel really close to action especially when they bring the fight out to the crowd. It is one of the highlights of watching live wrestling in such as small venues, as you are given an opportunity to have a close interaction with the action. I was on edge for more than one occasion that a child may get accident crushed during one of the fights in the crowd, but thankfully no accidents occurred as the wrestlers frequently brawled between the amazed spectators.
