Chris Rock was inspired to remake Heaven Can Wait (1978) after he heard that Muhammad Ali originally pursued to star in that film. Rock then thought that Richard Pryor would have been great in the role and changed the main character into an African-American comedian.
Chazz Palminteri, as Mr. King, upon seeing the recently deceased body of Charles Wellington lying underwater comments "Nice bath tub". In Diabolique (1996) Palmenteri himself was "drowned" by his mistress and wife in a bathtub.
In an early scene, Mrs. Wellington (Jennifer Coolidge) and Sklar (Greg Germann) are about to have sex on a pool table. In American Pie (1999), Coolidge's character played a woman who had sex on a pool table with a younger man.
Chris Rock stated on Total Request Live (1998) that if the film grossed over $25 million during its opening weekend he would return to host that year's MTV Video Music Awards. The film ultimately fell short, grossing $20 million over the four day President's Day weekend. Jamie Foxx hosted that year's Video Music Awards though Rock returned to host in 2003.
