Ancient fairytale about a poor fisherman
23 November 2010 | by pe-kokSee all my reviews

This is a beautiful hand colored short film that has survived in the US as Down in the Deep thanks to his brother Gaston ,who carefully photographed the stills send to him by his brother, to avoid the foreign film and negative ban. He could release it now as made in America, by his company called Star Film. The film is about a poor fisherman, who in despair jumps into the ocean. Instead of drowning he finds himself in the realm of the Lady of the Waves surrounded by fairies from her court. She tels him to go to sleep inside a giant oyster. When he awakes and the Oyster opens up he has an enormous string of pearls around him. By climbing upwards toward the real world the picture changes back to black and white. When he reaches home and dresses his wife with the pearls the picture changes back to color again. Then the Lady of the waves appears and changing his poor house in to a palace with a row of servants and beauty full fairies and a colorful fountain. Thus ended a amazing fairytale that give us an insight of the way George produced not only the film but also all the decors and props including the costumes. All of the extras were recruited from family and artist from the theater Houdin. There was also an musical peace written for this film by George but it was destroyed after he set fire to his studio in despair about the dead of his wife. Many of the songs he wrote were sung to me by his grand daughter during her visits to Amsterdam.
