It's kind of the same thing. Melies experimented time and time again with the removing of a head (his own) as he knew that a screen could keep the body from appearing on film. The magician puts the head in a box and then proceeds to torment it with cigarette smoke. He realizes what he is doing is cruel and opens the top of the box, blowing the smoke out but now he had to deal with the dismembered head. Pretty ordinary for Melies, but, nevertheless, fun to watch.
