For fans of arthouse theaters, the power of the big screen experience, and indie film in general, the now-annual Art House Theater Day offers up the chance to combine all those obsessions into one single event. Bolstered by the success of last year’s inaugural event, The Art House Convergence — an international organization of independent, community-based, mission-driven movie theaters — has now announced their plans for their second annual Art House Theater Day.
This year’s event will take place on Sunday, September 24, 2017, and over 150 theaters are currently on deck to offer up special film programs in what is billed as a “nationwide celebration of the cultural and community growth that art house theaters promote.”

This article processes some hard truths many won’t like.
The first part of this narrative, Milestone Is Dead, got a lot of people talking.
Nothing and I mean nothing in that article was new. I’ve written about what and why I thought the holdup at Milestone was many times. The only thing that was new was the title.
Every move Milestone has made I’ve predicted beforehand, and done so in writing.
But as always put a new spin on an old point, and people see something bright and shiny and want to play with it.
Now people are paying attention.
Paying attention to see whether or not I’m going to throw more shade at my former partners. I didn’t throw any in the first place. I told the truth Milestone 2.0 formed almost seven years ago, and there are no books.
Milestone is dead for four reasons.

Image Source: Getty / Carlo Allegri It's been more than nine years since Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose at the age of 28, and Spike TV is honoring his memory with a new documentary titled I Am Heath Ledger. We were able to see the film at the Tribeca Film Festival before its limited release on May 3 and television premiere on May 17, and it is just as heartbreaking as you would expect. Not only does it include rare footage of the actor, much of which he took himself, but it also features thoughtful interviews from his family and friends, detailing personal stories and unknown facts. Here are seven things we learned about his life and legacy from the documentary. Related37 Ways We'll Always Remember Heath Ledger 1. Heath Ledger won a posthumous Academy Award for his haunting portrayal of the Joker in 2008's The Dark Knight, but there have been long-standing rumors that the role continued to have a very serious effect on the actor even after the cameras stopped rolling. Heath's sister, Kate, decided to finally put an end to that talk when she attended the premiere of the documentary I Am Heath Ledger in New York City on Monday. "I was really shocked, because that was him having fun," she told The Daily Telegraph. "Every report was coming out that he was depressed and that [the role] was taking this toll on him, and we're going, honestly, it was the absolute opposite. It couldn't be more wrong." Anthony Hopkins is one of the most iconic actors of his generation, and he has some strong opinions about the brilliance of explosion king Michael Bay. Hopkins recently spoke with Yahoo Movies about why he wanted to join the “Transformers” saga, and wholeheartedly cited the director.

One of the most terrifying characters to manifest on-screen in recent years is Donnie Darko’s imaginary friend, Frank. Bunnies, generally speaking, are cute fluffy animals that wiggle their noses. Frank is no ordinary bunny.

Good news for “Southland Tales” fans: the 2007 fantasy thriller could be getting an expanded re-release. In an interview with Vulture, director Richard Kelly discussed the possibility of his surreal feature getting some form of re-release, and an “expanded” one at that.
“Southland Tales” is set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles in the then near future of 2008. The country goes into chaotic mode after an explosion on July 4, and small gangs take over the cities. In La, a group of rebels launch a scientific experiment to duplicate people’s identity. And that’s just the beginning of Kelly’s unique — and maligned — creative vision. When the film was released, it was widely bashed by critics and audiences alike, and still holds a dismal 36% Rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

New York City might be one of the most photographed and filmed cities on the planet, but few movies have truly captured the essence of the city quite like the romantic opening prologue to Woody Allen‘s “Manhattan.” One of the finest films ever directed by the filmmaker, it’s now looking better than ever and headed back to the big screen.

Two worlds collide, but only one survives in the latest trailer for “Transformers: The Last Knight,” the fifth installment in Michael Bay’s action franchise. Previewed just two days before Super Bowl Li, the clip shows how Optimus Prime “has left us” and how the world is divided by the good and the bad.
“The Last Knight” sees the return of Mark Wahlberg as Cade Yeager and Stanley Tucci as Joshua Joyce from “Age of Extinction.” Also returning to the “Transformers” universe are original trilogy actors Tyrese Gibson, John Duhamel and John Turturro. Anthony Hopkins, John Goodman, Laura Haddock and Isabela Moner also co-star.
Plot details are scare, yet the trailer shows how a huge battle is on the way and with it, major explosions, demolishing of cities and skyscrapers, and plenty of action sequences ensue.

Television reimaginings of classic tales have made for some wonderfully engaging entertainment (going back to Syfy efforts Tin Man and Alice, which were surprisingly fun) but Emerald City moves to a new level as Tarsem Singh returns to the form he hasn’t quite managed since The Fall.
The warning that should come on the tin is that audiences shouldn’t go into this expecting anything like a “retelling” of The Wizard of Oz. It would be nearly impossible to give a clear idea of what’s happened to L. Frank Baum’s works here, but it isn’t just modernized, but dipped in the grime of reality, and subjected to an absolutely unfettered imagination. It covers elements of the first three books (and perhaps beyond… it’s been a while), but is “inspired by” in the broadest sense. Michael Bay’s claims that “Transformers: The Last Knight,” the fifth installment in the blockbuster franchise, will be his last. The trailer for the picture recently debuted this week, which features the star-studded cast and Decepticons destroying everything in sight. While this might be his last time directing the Takara and Hasbro-created toys, Bay revealed that he had additional plans to make an R-rated “Transformers.”
Speaking to Collider, the filmmaker stated that he’s pitched the idea ahead of the Bumblebee film, due out in 2018, but that it most likely will never happen.
“You know, yeah, that would be fun. There’s actually one idea that would be really fun R-rated, with Bumblebee,” he said. “I don’t wanna say, but it would be really fun. Very Quentin [Tarantino], you know.”

The post-Thanksgiving weekend is one of a handful every year that offer no new wide studio release. Last year Universal took a successful shot with the off-beat Christmas-themed “Krampus.” Its $16 million opening weekend pushed Top Ten grosses ahead by a small margin from this year’s total.
The strength of two strong holdovers — Disney’s “Moana” and Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” — almost brought the numbers to par. They also pushed the totals above three similar bleak weekends (Super Bowl, post-Labor Day and Halloween) often shunned for top films.
The only new semi-wide release was Blumhouse Productions’ “Incarnate,” directed by Brad Peyton (“San Quentin”), who took advantage of the freedoms of a low budget to make a horror film. The net returns — against a low budget, digital advertising and later earnings — make the just-over $2 million total look pretty good.

It's been two years since Robin Williams passed away, and his widow, Susan Williams, is working hard to raise awareness about Lewy Body Disease, the brain disease that led to the actor's tragic death. On Sept. 27, Susan wrote a piece for the medical journal Neurology entitled "The Terrorist Inside My Husband's Brain." In the essay, she talks about her husband's final months and how he struggled with several symptoms that didn't fit one diagnosis, writing, "By wintertime, problems with paranoia, delusions and looping, insomnia, memory, and high cortisol levels - just to name a few - were settling in hard . . . Psychotherapy and other medical help was becoming a constant in trying to manage and solve these seemingly disparate conditions." She then recalls their final day together and how it gave her hope that his health was improving, revealing, "As the second weekend in August approached, it seemed his delusional looping was calming down.

The movie is overloaded with talent, but centers on a young actress in the ’50s (Lily Collins) who finds herself working for Howard Hughes (Beatty).
The general plot is covered in the trailer, and fairly obvious, but more importantly the film looks to be a fantastic homage that simultaneously uses the most outlandish character to highlight an outlandish era/industry, and showcases the elements of film that turned so many into truly committed cinephiles.
The film hits November 23rd, and also stars: Alden Ehrenreich, Ed Harris, Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, and many more.
Take a look, and let us know what you think of this one.

Back in 2014, Denzel Washington starred in The Equalizer, an Antoine Fuqua-directed update of an ‘80s TV show about a retired badass soldier guy who tries to make up for his dark past by acting generally helpful. The film ended up being fine, but Sony Pictures was so confident in it that it started developing a sequel months before The Equalizer had even come out. Now, according to /Film, both Washington and Fuqua have signed on to return to the sequel, with Washington starring and Fuqua directing (obviously). Also, as /Film points out, this will be the first sequel of Washington’s career, which hopefully opens the door for him to return to some of his other big roles. Who wouldn’t want to see Deja Vu 2: Deja Vu All Over Again, or Return Flight, or 2 Guns 2: 3 Guns? Or maybe The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 ...

“Do you remember the guy who played that guy in that thing? His song was good wasn't it?”
The above is an example of a conversation regularly heard in our house. The only variants are that sometimes it was 'that girl from that thing', and a lot of the time the song was far from good.
Well sod it – I think we as a nation need to have more discussions about Craig McLachlan and Stefan Dennis. It's the only way our society will grow. So here are 12 songs from Soapland that weren't done by Kylie, Jason, or Kylie and Jason.

In 2011, Faye Corman was rushing through a New Jersey train station after a visit to the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia with her 3-year-old blind son, Jon Paul, when the boy suddenly stopped to stare at the platform's concrete floor. "Jon Paul, let's go! We need to hurry and get home," Faye recalls telling him while urging him to keep moving. Just when she was thinking that she might have to scoop him up in her arms, something incredible happened: Jon Paul reached down and picked up a shiny silver gum wrapper. And that's when Faye knew. BioShock
The first BioShock is one of, if not the best game I’ve ever played. It is terrifying, engaging, and Gorgeous all while presenting one of the greatest stories of gaming history. I would give anything to go back and experience the twists and turns of Rapture all over again.
I remember sitting through my first play through legitimately too uncomfortable to play at night or at least when it was dark because the growls of the splicers made my stomach do flips. The near constant snarls in the distance kept you on edge throughout every inch of Rapture. It was the epitome of chilling.
Even more, I would love to experience the intense revelation of who is Atlas. You spend half the game being ferried from one location to the next with someone you trust talking in your ear, telling you what to do. Then before you know it,...

Denzel Washington has never done a sequel. That has to be extremely rare for an actor of his caliber, especially one who does his share of popular action movies. But the projects he chooses, even those of a genre prone to franchises, tend not to lend themselves to sequels. Maybe there could be an Unstoppable 2 or a Deja Vu All Over Again or another tale involving one of his many detective characters, but there’s apparently been no interest. Inside Man was supposed to spawn a follow-up, but that was canceled. Now we’re about to find out if Washington’s latest hit, The Equalizer, will give him his first movie series. The Equalizer 2 has actually been in development for a while, but so far the actor hasn’t signed on. The sequel likely won’t go forward without him, so let’s just assume he will be on board in order to imagine what’s next...

Author Terry McMillan was in her late 40s when she married 23-year-old Jamaican Jonathan Plummer in 1998. He was even the love interest inspiration for her bestselling novel, How Stella Got her Groove Back. But the two had a very public and very nasty breakup when Plummer told his wife in 2004 that he was gay. What followed was an ugly divorce, several years of public recriminations, a lawsuit and an obvious bitterness emanating from McMillan– bitterness that seemed to extend beyond Plummer and apply to the gay community at large.
Well, it’s nice to see that McMillan has mellowed quite a bit and has let go of a lot of the anger she once carried.
