Storyline

As a token of his appreciation to the well-beloved King Louis XV of France, a gifted artisan and renowned magician presents his latest creation, as a royal chamberlain followed by an assembly of eight male servants, unload a mysterious wooden box at the Palace of Versailles' broad and sunny imperial terrace. And just like that, the sensational curiosity is uncovered, revealing an enormous and magnificent folding fan composed of seven intricately-embroidered branches which house a septet of youthful ladies-in-waiting. Next, a beautiful minuet ensues, as the mesdemoiselles' costumes dissolve into fine noble ensembles. What an exquisite spectacle, worthy of an emperor. Written by Nick Riganas

Wonderful Living Fan

Wonderful Living Fan, The (1904)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

aka Le Merveilleux éventail vivant

Melies plays a conjurer putting on a show for a royal crowd. The big trick of the show involves a large box that, when unfolded, becomes a fan made up of seven women. The trick movie has some impressive scenes like Melies making the women change clothing but overall I found it rather dull and slow even at just over three minutes. This year would turn out to be a very big one for the director but you really wouldn't know it by watching this film.
