'Stranger Things': How Netflix's Retro Hit Resurrects the Eighties
It's one thing to set a TV series in the 1980s; it's a whole other thing, however, to make it feel like it was actually shot during the Reagan-and-Rubik's-Cube era. Matt and Ross Duffer's new Netflix series Stranger Things is full of nostalgic nods to the decade and its pop-cultural products, but it's also uncommonly rigorous about getting the details just right — whether it's the many pitch-perfect music cues, the hat-tipping nods and homages to Eighties movies, or simply nailing the cringeworthy fashion statements of the day (those Mom jeans!

Early Years

Born in the Mitte neighborhood of Berlin in the former East Germany, he was 6 when the Wall came down, which coincided with his first thesping role, in a Defa production. “My mother felt there was a hidden talent inside of me,” Schilling says. His career began when he was 12, when he joined the Berliner Ensemble, a theater group founded by Bertolt Brecht.

If you spent last week looking for my Pretty Little Liars recap, I'll bet you felt confused and betrayed, huh? All those clues led you to believe it'd be here shortly, but it never showed up. I wanted you to know what it feels like to be an Emily Fields in real life, is all. Just kidding! I had some medical complications last week that kept me in a Vicodin coma for nearly six full days. I'm sorry I didn't get around to recapping "Remains of the 'A.'" Not only because I missed your commentary, but also because it was a Norman Buckley-directed episode, which means it was gorgeous, and I like to talk about that. But I did make a photo recap of the episode so we can get caught up together.

John Edwards Escapes Jail Time As All Charges Against Him Are Dropped

John Edwards was handed a major victory today regarding the remaining charges against him. Read on for details! It's been a bumpy ride for John Edwards. The disgraced former senator faced six felony charges stemming from the 2008 presidential race in which he was accused of using $1 million in campaign funds to hide his extramarital affair with campaign videographer Rielle Hunter. Last month, when he was found not guilty on one charge, and a mistrial was declared on the other five, it was unclear whether prosecutors would want to pursue a retrial of the remaining charges. But today, TMZ reports that John has been guaranteed his freedom as the prosecutors have filed an order to dismiss the remaining charges, making it official: there will be no retrial. The remaining charges included 3 additional counts of receiving illegal campaign contributions, one count of conspiracy, and one count of making false statements. What do you think,

John Edwards Trial: The Top Shocking Revelations

  • PEOPLE.com
At its core, it's a case about money, but at each stage John Edwards's character also seems to be on trial. After 14 days of testimony in a Greensboro, N.C., courtroom, prosecutors on Thursday rested a case that both alleged criminal misuse of campaign funds and laid bare the implosion of a once-promising political figure. Even before the defense called its first witness, legal analysts said the prosecution's case was far from a slam-dunk. "They've shown in as many ways as possible that he was a bad guy who did terrible things," says former federal prosecutor Kieran Shanahan, who has followed the trial closely,

Names We Loved - and Loved to Hate - in 2010

Ah, 2010. Seems like a million years ago, when in fact we're only two weeks into the new year. Like all good bloggers, I have a professional obligation to look back at the year that was and summarize the highs and lows of my particular area of expertise--that is, naming. So, for your enjoyment, my colleagues at Catchword and I put together a rundown of names that made the headlines in 2010.

Bad Ideas, Bad Names (adding insult to injury)

Vuvuzela: The world's population learns this word simply so they can talk about how much they hate it. Surprisingly, no one confuses it with a Venezuelan pudendum.

The Double-Down: KFC introduces its heart-attack-in-a-sandwich. Might as well call it Double Infarction. Or better yet, ClusterCluck.

Eyjafjallajökull: A name that would live on in infamy ... if only we could pronounce it. (We suggest calling it "Jeff.")

Top Kill: Yet another Bp tactic that couldn't cap America's worst oil spill.

Nah, the zombies are in Atlanta, and it’s not like anyone’s headed to AtlantOHHHH My God forgot that dude from the first episode! Ah geez. Hopefully he’s still busy not shooting his wife and hasn’t strolled into downtown Atlanta and gotten superkilled. On the plus side, he’s nicely set up to save Rick’s life next episode

November DVD Playhouse

DVD Playhouse—November 2010

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Audio commentary by critic Gary Giddins; Excerpt from 1966 audio interview with Kubrick; 1979 interview with Douglas; New interviews with Jan Harlan, Christiane Kubrick, and producer James B.
