Briefly: Paramount and J.J. Abrams' company Bad Robot are putting together a new mystery movie, and have tapped Brad Parker to direct. Parker made The Diary of Lawson Oxford, and also worked as second-unit director on Let Me In. Keeping things in the family, Let Me In director Matt Reeves will produce this currently untitled action film, alongside Abrams and Bryan Burk. The script is by actor and writer Michael Gilio (who wrote a draft [1] of Carter Beats the Devil)  but we've got no details on it right now. Gilio also wrote a draft of Treasure Island that had Paul Greengrass attached for a moment, and he wrote a script called The Interventionalist with which Alexander Payne was involved back in 2010. Warner Brothers, who is no stranger in competing against Disney on stuff, is poised to take on their own version of a pirates adventure story and develop a new movie version of the classic novel, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Producer Lionel Wigram, who produced WB’s winter hit, Sherlock Holmes, is working with the studio to beat another Treasure Island film in development. (via Pajiba).

Earlier this year Variety reported Ecosse Films was developing an adaptation of Treasure Island that would update the story of pirates and buried treasure by playing up the relationship between Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins and do for the novel what Guy Ritchie did for Sherlock Holmes.

Back in February, it was reported that the UK Production company Ecosse (Brideshead Revisted, Becoming Jane), had begun development on yet another Treasure Island movie, this one aimed at contemporary audiences, playing up the relationship between Long John Silver and narrator Jim Hawkins. The idea, it seemed, was to do for Treasure Island what Guy Ritchie did for Sherlock Holmes.

Well, what Guy Ritchie did for Sherlock Holmes couldn't have happened if producer Lionel Wigram hadn't put that into motion. He's also producing one of the two Three Musketeers revivals currently in production (the one with Doug Liman circling), and my guess is that Lionel Wigram thinks he owns the market on updating 19th-century literature for contemporary audiences. London -- Online film hub Jaman has partnered with Cinetic Rights Management to secure Cinetic content for its Web users.

The deal expands Jaman's catalog to more than 7,000 films and includes Cinetic titles such as Michael Gilio's "Kwik Stop" and documentary "We Are Wizards," which profiles the underground Harry Potter community that pays homage to J.K. Rowling's characters and stories.

Other titles include Paul Todisco's "One Day Like Rain," a film nominated for the jury prize at the Seattle International Film Festival.

"Jaman's collaboration with Cinetic solidifies our commitment to provide compelling content to the independent film community," Jaman managing director David Fischer said. "Through partnerships like this one, Jaman aggressively expands our library with award-winning movies that are loved by our audience of film aficionados."

Over the last several months Gore Verbinski has attached his name to five different projects. He’s on board to direct Rango, BioShock, a segment in David Fincher’s Heavy Metal and a film about the online fantasy role-playing world. He’s also producing a U.S. remake of the Korean monster flick The Host. Well, you can now add another. The trades are reporting that the filmmaker, whose previous credits include The Weather Man and the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, is now in talks to helm a drama from writer Michael Gilio, a Chicago-based actor who previously wrote, directed and starred in Kwik Stop. The untitled drama focuses on a retired rancher who responds to a phone solicitation swindle that wipes out his savings. Gilio gave his script the working title Black Hole when it was included on the Black List, an unofficial Hollywood tally of promising unmade scripts.
