A Warning for Broadcast TV: When There Are Too Many Shows to Watch, Generic Titles Like ‘Deception’ Just Don’t Cut It

  • Indiewire
ABC just premiered its latest twist on the cop procedural format — a pretty fun show starring Jack Cutmore-Scott as Cameron Black, a stage magician who decides to use his talents to help the FBI solve crimes while also investigating a mystery of his own.

A magician doing illusions to solve crime is a fresh twist on the genre, Cutmore-Scott is a charming lead, the supporting cast is fantastic, and the magic seen in the pilot is really cool. But what’s this show titled? “Deception.”

That’s right, “Deception” — not to be mistaken for the 1946 film starring Bette Davis and Claude Reine, the 2008 film starring Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman, the 2013 NBC series about a lady detective investigating her childhood best friend’s murder, or countless other low-budget films over the years. “Deception” is a one-word title so generic and bland that by the end of this sentence, you’ll

‘Star Trek: Discovery’: Jason Isaacs Apologizes for Lying, Admits to Feeling Like a ‘Drunken Hippo’ When Fighting Michelle Yeoh
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 1 Episode 13, “What’s Past is Prologue.”]

Jason Isaacs seemed relatively cheerful when IndieWire got him on the phone to discuss “What’s Past is Prologue,” the latest episode of “Star Trek: Discovery.” But this was how he began the conversation: “Lucky me. I’m talking about my death and me leaving a fantastic, successful, popular show. What could be better?”

Because, lest you were preparing for another classic “Trek” fakeout, Isaacs felt fairly comfortable saying that while death can be a flexible thing in science fiction television, “Right now I’m going to say [Lorca’s] pretty dead. Dead as a doornail. That’s not a bruise. I’m incinerated, particle by particle. It will take a lot of jigsaw puzzle fans to put me back together again.”

We want to believe Isaacs, though he did say that he needed to apologize for months of lying. After all,

DC's The Flash Solo Movie Being Rewritten by King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword Writer

Man, the DC Extended Universe just can't seem to catch a break, can they? The latest obstacle for the struggling superhero franchise comes in the form of a rewrite of The Flash solo film, a movie that's experienced a myriad of problems throughout its existence thus far.

First, the film lost its writer/director Seth Grahame-Smith due to "creative differences," and then Dope director Rick Famuyiwa was brought on as a replacement before ultimately falling away — also citing "creative differences." The project is currently without a director, and Variety reports that King Arthur: Legend of the Sword writer Joby Harold has come on board to do a page-one rewrite of the screenplay. He's also writing a new Robin Hood and a Twilight Zone movie for WB, and he wrote the 2007 Jessica Alba thriller Awake.

I haven't seen King Arthur yet, but I personally think all of its trailers look godawful.
