Happy Campers director Amy Nicholson with Anne-Katrin Titze: “There are times when you get lucky and you get magic.”
I first met Amy Nicholson in 2013 when I was on the jury of the inaugural First Time Fest with Gay Talese, the B-52’s Fred Schneider, and Killer Films’ Christine Vachon. Amy’s documentary, Zipper: Coney Island's Last Wild Ride, won our Outstanding Achievement in Editing Award (by John Young and Jonah Moran): “Fast-paced editing that captures, in a balanced way, a story about humanity in an age of greed. The editing works like the Zipper itself, connecting the ride with the story of Coney Island.”
Amy Nicholson often places the people side-by-side, Wes Anderson style.
In Happy Campers, a highlight of the 14th edition of Doc NYC, we are taken to the Inlet View Rv Park campground on Chincoteague Island in Virginia. Nicholson often places the people side-by-side, Wes Anderson style,...

An Rv park on Chincoteague Island, Virginia, faces extinction in Amy Nicholson’s lyrical, if somewhat slight, documentary “Happy Campers.” A portrait of a community in flux, Nicholson trains her camera on the inhabitants and seasonal tourists of Inlet View, a rundown park with ocean views that houses lower to middle-class residents. After the property is sold off to developers, who hope to capitalize on the waterfront location and build luxury vacation spots, the residents are forced to leave a place that many have called home for decades.

Our series of lists devoted to underappreciated films brings us to the year 2007, and another 25 overlooked gems...
For some reason, the number three was a common factor in several blockbuster movies of 2007. The third film in the Pirates Of The Caribbean series (At World's End) dominated the box office, Spider-Man 3 marked Sam Raimi's last entry as director in the series, while Mike Myers went for a hat trick of hits with Shrek The Third.
I Am Legend was the third and most financially successful attempt to bring Richard Matheson's classic novel to the big screen, Rush Hour 3 marked Jackie Chan's last action pairing with Chris Tucker, while Zack Snyder's musky sword-swinger 300 was notable for having the number three in the title.
Iffy attempts at numerology aside, 2007 was also a superb for year for movies in general - particularly underappreciated ones,...

Which co-star Can Mark Wahlberg be talking about?
The 'Ted' star was musing on the etiquette between actors, and it turns out not everyone knows how to behave...
"I've seen some actors coming in saying, 'this is my moment, I'm going to steal this scene and steamroll this guy.'
"I've done it myself a couple of times, but sheerly out of anger, and that was only on 'The Departed'... and it's a long story, so we won't go there."
Happy campers? ... the luminary cast of Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning 'The Departed'
Hmm... who can have caused such wrath? Wahlberg's 'Departed' co-stars include Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Jack Nicholson, Ray Winstone... even Martin Sheen. So the mind boggles.
The good news is that Wahlberg claims no such challenges on the set of his latest film, Broken City, even dealing with the well-established...

Bart Layton's missing Bafta, Michael Fassbender shows off his moves and Park Chan-wook's Ott English debut, Stoker
Imposter takes Bafta
A strange case of art mirroring life at the Baftas, as the trophy awarded to The Imposter director Bart Layton went missing. Layton, along with his producing partner, Dimitri Doganis, won the prize for outstanding British debut, and was proudly clutching the golden statue at all the post-ceremony parties. Arriving at the Weinstein Company bash, Layton put down his prized possession to talk to the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Michael Fassbender. But moments later he turned round to find it had disappeared. An imposter had walked off with it. CCTV identified the culprit and it was returned to Layton at 5.30am.

It's been far too long since Happy Endings fans have been able to enjoy an original episode of the ABC comedy: The show's season finale was all the way back on April 4. And because Alphabet execs seem to enjoy torturing die-hard fans, the network last week revealed that Happy won't begin its third season until Oct. 23. (We'll spare you the math: That's six months between originals). Vulture can't speed up the hands of time, but we can offer Happy campers the salve of spending a few minutes with series star Adam Pally, whose Max Blum (in full Mandonna garb) was last seen serenading his friends with a rockin' cover of Like a Prayer. When it eventually returns, producers told us we can expect to see Max paying homage to a classic Kathy Bates role, quite possibly Misery. (Pally's response when hearing of this? "Pass! If it's not a direct...

Wristcutters: A Love Story Dir. Goran Dukic (2006) A slight digression: musician and sometime actor, Eugene Hutz, best known for his work as Gogol Bordello's frontman and as Alex in the film version of Everything is Illuminated, must have the charisma of 1000 suns. Or the type of charisma that inspires people to become obsessed with him. There's a documentary on him, The Pied Piper of Hutzovina, and Madonna's debut as a director, Filth and Wisdom, is mostly centered around Hutz. Wristcutters: A Love Story, has a central character of Eugene, a Russian musician played by actor Shea Whigham, who is based on Hutz. Imagine how charismatic and interesting Hutz must be to inspire so many people's art... Mindboggling, right? And in Wristcutters, Eugene shows our hero, Zia (an all-grown-up Patrick Fugit), around the afterlife limbo for suicides where the movie is set. Based on the short story Kneller's Happy Campers...
