Rich and wealthy PN Oberoi's daughter Rita liked Anil's performance on the streets and one day asked him to come inside his home when her dad was away. But her father returned, got furious seeing Anil and his mother inside his mansion and leading to him beating up Anil's mom, when she tries to protect Anil.
Anil is scarred by the memory of P. N. Oberoi (Om Shivpuri) beating his mother Radha (Gita Siddharth) in this incident during his childhood. Anil picks up his guitar to retaliate but is restrained by Oberoi's guards. When the police arrive, Oberoi alleges that Anil was stealing a guitar from his house and has him arrested. So, to save Anil, Radha takes the theft charge on herself. Due to this the mother son duo are ostracized in the colony they live in and have to leave Bombay and settle in Goa.
Anil grows up to become a singer, but due to lack of opportunities he sings at weddings to pay the bills.
Manager David Brown (Om Puri) is fed up with the tantrums of current Indian disco champion Sam (Karan Razdan), who is Oberoi's son. Sam starts acting unprofessionally and won't keep his commitments to shows in other cities (his next show was in Chandigarh). David asks Sam to respect the audience, but Sam is oblivious to any criticism and says that he will always remain on top. David quits as he believes that every star gets ruined when success gets to their head.
Nikki Brown (Kalpana Iyer) is David's daughter. Nikki is a dancer in Sam's troupe and is in love with him. Sam and Nikki are having regular sex, even though Sam is seeing other women at the same time. Rita is Oberoi's daughter and Sam's sister. David vows to create a new superstar of the music world to eclipse Sam.
For the next show, David looks for some new talent, and he happens to see Anil dance-walking across a street in the middle of the night. David signs a contract with Anil, and for his first performance, he brings an investor and promises to cover the investor's losses, if the show is a dud. David tells Nikki to abandon Sam, but she won't.
Rebranded as 'Jimmy', the rising disco star must take the throne from Sam and win the heart of Rita (Kim), Oberoi's daughter. Rita is planted by Sam in the audience to disrupt Jimmy's debut performance. Rita and her friends start throwing sandals at Jimmy and try to boo him off stage. Jimmy is undeterred and throws a stupendous performance to win over the crowd and drowns out Rita's protests. Later, Jimmy confronts Rita and says that one day Rita will be forced to take his autograph. Jimmy reaffirms that he is a self-made artist and to him Rita is just another obstacle that he has to overcome on the path to success.
David takes Jimmy back to Bombay to turn him into a brand. David informs Sam that he has bought out Sam's upcoming shows, and now Jimmy will perform at those shows. Sam is livid and Oberoi hears this. Oberoi hires Russian goon Basco (Bob Christo) to teach a lesson to Jimmy & David. Basco tries to stop Jimmy from attending his next concert, but Jimmy beats the goons and performs a show that enhances his reputation further. Jimmy becomes an overnight sensation, and many brands sign him to market their products.
Jimmy gets drunk with his old Goa friends and visits the slum which had chased him and his mother out of Bombay, so many years ago. There Jimmy learns that Oberoi has purchased the slum land and wants to clear out the residents to develop his project. Jimmy beats up Oberoi's goons and stops them from evacuating the slum.
At the mayor's party, Jimmy sees Oberoi and sings the same song that he sang in his home all those years ago. Rita is at the party too and recognizes that Jimmy is that same boy. Rita falls in love with Jimmy and starts spending time with him. To make Oberoi jealous, Jimmy kisses Rita in front of him. When Oberoi bans Rita from meeting Jimmy, Jimmy takes her away as she is an adult and Rita also says that she is going with her own consent. Then Jimmy enters the land auction and forces Oberoi's ego to bid Rs 70 Lakhs for land worth Rs 10 Lakhs.
Sam starts taking drugs as he is a nobody now. Oberoi hires men to connect Jimmy's electric guitar to 5,000 volts of electricity (Nikki overhears this plan). Nikki calls Jimmy's home and informs his mother Radha but is killed for the same. Meanwhile Radha rushes to the venue and takes the guitar before Jimmy can touch it. Jimmy gets guitar phobia after witnessing his mother's death. Later, Oberoi's goons break his legs. With help from Rita, Jimmy begins to walk.
Jimmy must claim first place for Team India at the International Disco Dancing Competition in the middle of strong competition from Team Africa (Disco King and Queen) and Team Paris (Disco King and Queen). Jimmy is reluctant to dance, but Rita persuades him to do so. Sam arrives with a guitar to scare Jimmy.
Rita manages to drag the show to encourage Jimmy to sing but to no avail. The crowd pelts him with stones which hit his head. Jimmy's uncle Raju (Rajesh Khanna) arrives and advises him to infuse his mother and his music; he throws the guitar to Jimmy, after which Jimmy begins to sing.
Oberoi's goons kill Raju (He steps in front of the bullet aimed by Basco towards Jimmy), after which Jimmy travels to their lair and beats them up. In the ensuing fight, Oberoi is electrocuted.
