Storyline

She is asleep, dreaming. Suddenly the phone rings. On the other end of the line her lover asks her to come. The submissive woman obeys, adorns herself in fine feathers and takes a cab. Once in her lover's apartment, she lends herself to his demeaning erotic games. Is she still a woman or a sex toy? Anything better than a hen? Written by Guy Bellinger

Interesting and clever, but hardly 'fun'.
8 September 1999 | by alice liddellSee all my reviews

An animated short, rather typical of a certain politicised (as in inclusive, feminist, anti-patriarchal) strand that forswears 'entertainment' (e.g. plot, wit) in favour of theory and meaning. The film's defining movement is one of metamorphosis, as a woman, lying in bed begins to dream about being a chicken handled by some man, possibly her lover. This idea goes through several mutations, all reflecting the heroine's fears, anxieties and desires.

Although the film's themes of emotional imprisonment and objectification are barely original, the fluidity of the animation (and hence the woman's imagination), and the imaginative sympathy with the protagonist, are reminiscent of Kristeva's ecriture feminine, although obviously less convoluted: offering a 'female' form to express female experience and desire. There is occasional beauty to some of the images: it's just not much fun, you know?
