Sadly neglected 'Yugo' Masterpiece
15 July 2017 | by FalconeerSee all my reviews

The late, Great Bekim Fehmiu portrays a man at the end of his life, who commits suicide by jumping from a skyscraper in the city of Croatia. And that's how this haunting, atmospheric film begins. The viewer learns all the reasons leading up to this man's fate, as his story is shown in flashbacks, while investigators interview the people in Ivo's life.

Beautifully filmed in stark b&w photography, with intentionally dreary settings, to communicate the sense of alienation this man feels. Actor Bekim Fehmiu can speak volumes with a simple expression. And the only copy I could find of this rare film, had no English subtitles, and I do not understand Serbo-Croatian..so I depended mostly on vocal nuances and facial expressions, along with descriptions that I had read of this wonderful movie. "Protest" resembles the Godard films from the 1960's in both style and substance. I think it is a tragedy that this movie is completely unavailable to any English speaking audiences. So many cinema lovers are missing out on a classic, masterful film.
