This is another under the radar gem and it's another solid in the Licensed Video game genre. Ok, this isn't quite a licensed but it actually was supposed to be because this game was supposed to be "The Terminator" but Sunsoft unfortunately lost the rights and also the fact that the sequel "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" was coming out one year after this game's release made it all the more difficult. It's really too bad it couldn't of been left to its original licensed title or sequel title for that matter because that would of meant Sunsoft could have had two really good movie licensed title games under their belt "Batman" and "Terminator". But playing this game I'll admit this is one of the better "Terminator" video games around as most games based on the film franchise have been severe malfunctions.
I can't say much for the plot and story as it's really generic but as I said that's because of the lost license. Here's the real story for us "Terminator" fans, the whole game takes place in the future war and your Kyle Reese liberating the humans from the Terminators. That's it in a nutshell, this plotline is part of what makes this licensed (should be anyway) game unique, most licensed games at the time were just a retelling of the film video game style. But this game does its own thing, tells it's own story but setting the game in the future war, which makes this game sort of a prequel as that's what Kyle Reese has been doing before he went to the present. Heck, this was also before prequels became common place like the two "Star Wars" shows "Rebels" and "Clone Wars".
The gameplay is basic as it's your simple platforming action and run and gun of getting from point A to B, nothing new but fun all the same. I really like the graphical presentation on the backgrounds which really capture the post-apocalyptic dark atmosphere from the first level which is the surface full of the ruins of human civilization, second an underground bunker and it's dreariness, third which is part of the enemy base as it's all technological and cybernetic. Really like the designs of the enemies from some of the familiar ones from the "Terminator" movie like a giant walking robot henchman whom is obviously a "T-800" and most that were never in the film, with a video game you have to add more enemies in. Down to the bosses that are all well designed like in the first level a chopper which is supposed to be a "HK (Hunter Killer" and the second boss which is one of the Giant Rolling Hunter sentries.
Two things that make the game stand out the game unique is in the physics of movement falling and jumping. In most games it's sort of defies physics like when you drop it's straight down or when you jump it's really high like you're on the moon. In this game they utilize realistic physics because when you fall you actually fall slightly forward diagonal, when you jump you jump in place or forward or backward depending on which direction you build your momentum. And if you get hit you shift back a little. These realistic movements do add a slight risk factor because it causes you to think a little before you move, so you need to pick your jumps and falls carefully, your survival in the game depends on it.
Another is the music which is just awesome, as usual with Sunsoft this game has one of the best music tracks I've ever heard in any game, these are the kinds of tracks I could play on my phone or even at a party as some of them you can easily dance to. It's hard to pick one I love as each of them are all good in their own way.
"Journey to Silius" ("The Terminator" if you prefer) is a B list run and gun but functional and fun none the less and is worth a journey.
