Brilliant, bizarre, brutal, stylishly well-directed 70's crime flick
4 July 2008 | by seanmoliver64See all my reviews

From the very effective and blatantly uncredited use/rip-off of the Temptation's "Papa Was A Rollin Stone" as the theme music, to the pastiche of every action film style imaginable (noir, spaghetti, etc) this Roc Tien directed minor-masterpiece will thrill fans of surreal, over the top mayhem and laconic, macho brutality. The film (I found it titled as 'Hands of Death' on one of those 'Kung Fu 20-pack' DVD sets of 20 movies for about $6.00) blatantly steals from Leone, but does it very, very well. The fight scenes are mercifully brief (by Martial Arts film standards) but well-done, with multiple oddball scenes of pain and injury including the bit where the crime boss Mr Kwan - sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of another crime lord - breaks his own leg to atone for one of his employees' betrayal!
