Storyline

Hornblower is called to take a company of British troops (which the sailors call lobsters because of their red coats) and a company of French nationalists to France to fight in the revolution. But Hornblower is horrified by the brutality of the French commander as he guillotines everyone in a village that destroyed his former home and his unwillingness to take part in the actual battles. However, when the commander and his men set out to rape and brutalize a young school teacher, Hornblower vows his protection of her. Written by John Sacksteder <jsackste@bellsouth.net>

Trivia

In the original novel Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, "The Frogs and the Lobsters" occurs before Hornblower receives his promotion to Lieutenant, or even being ranked Acting-Lieutenant. Furthermore, the novel does not have any love interest for Hornblower. See more »

Goofs

Major Edrington tells Hornblower in Plymouth that the detachment he commands is from the 95th of Foot. Given Hornblower has now passed his Lieutenant board, this sets the episode around 1800-03, according to the books, by which time the 95th had been reformed as a rifle company, wearing green uniforms and using the Baker rifle, whereas Edrington's men are in the standard infantry's more usual red, with the British Pattern musket. This timing, though, validates the Ancient Mariner quotation by Pellew. However, if this was the Quiberon invasion of 1795, as posited elsewhere, the 95th of the time were en route to the Cape of Good Hope. But the Ancient Mariner is ruled out. See more »

The best in the current series!
31 January 2000 | by alteaSee all my reviews

The 4-part made for tv-series comes to an end, at the moment that is, with a terrific final episode! This episode is the best installment of all four movies! It has everything from espionage, intrigue, murder, war, horror to romance and beyond, you name it! It is a classic! Each minute of the movie is filled with great drama! This is Horathio Hornblower at its best! BTW the use of music in this episode is excellent. So now that the series comes to an end I hope that we will see Horathio Hornblower very soon again on the little screen, until then, it is back to the novels of Forester to fill in these waiting days!

Conclusion: The series is highly recommended! It is an oases compared to the desert of day to day tv-fare!
