- A woman begins an affair with her brother-in-law. The family finds out. Complications ensue.
- Mark and Elaine are married and living in an isolated California beach house with their two teenage children, Ronnie and Stacy, and Elaine's sister Kate, with whom her husband Mark has been having an affair for years. When Mark threatens to leave Elaine one night, Kate runs after him to his boat, hoping that now they can go off together. When Mark refuses, Kate, in a moment of rage, hits him with a champagne bottle sending him overboard. Unable to save him, she returns home, not telling anyone of her deed. The film then chronicles how each family member deals with the death of their loved one and the often irrational, frequently perverse behaviors the death, as well as their overwhelming sense of loneliness and isolation, makes them do. Meanwhile, Kate becomes stricken more and more by her own guilt and grief, so much so she looses her own will to live.
