Lex Luthor had never been to Comic-Con before this year. That's right, Michael Rosenbaum -- who played the Superman villain on "Smallville" from 2001-2011 -- made his first appearance at the geek convention in 2015, almost 15 years after the teen drama premiered on The WB. "Lex Loser," the actor joked when toofab's Brian Particelli caught up with him and costar Sara Rue in San Diego over the weekend, where the two were promoting their new TV Land comedy "Impastor." And with Jesse Eisenberg stepping into Luthor's shoes for the highly-anticipated "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice," we had to ask -- is Michael excited to see a new take on his former role? "I’ll always check things out," he said, excitedly. "I don’t hold grudges like ‘Oh, it isn’t me!’ Eisenberg will be great. Why’s it always the Jews with Lex Luthor? Rosenbaum, Eisenberg, what’s going on here?...

Big remains one of our favourite Tom Hanks childhood movies (perhaps losing out to Turner and Hooch, boy did that make us blub, we barely held it together) so we're slightly unnerved by reports that a TV series based on the film has been commissioned.
Kevin Biegel and Mike Royce are now said to have received a script plus penalty commitment from broadcaster Fox for the half-hour comedy series, which will explore what it means to be both an adult and child in today's world.
The 1988 Oscar-nominated movie, written by Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg, sees a boy's simple wish to be big come true as a 13-year-old is transformed into a 30-year-old overnight.
We take a nostalgic look at the cast of the huge hit - including Tom Hanks and John Heard - and what came next below:

There has been a lot of discussion recently about female superhero movies, and how Black Widow should get her own spin off film. During an interview with USA Today Robert Downey Jr. was asked about what he thought of the possibility of a Black Widow movie. He starts off by joking, "Doesn’t Scarlett deserve a break?" He went on to say:
"Look, I think that the interesting thing particularly after [Guardians of the Galaxy] with Zoe [Saldana], even from the first Iron Man where Pepper was kind of this really – to me the Iron Man franchise would never have taken off without [Gwyneth] Paltrow. There’s something about her that grounded the story. She’s not your typical lady in a superhero movie, and then by Iron Man 3 she’s swallowing serums and putting on suits and kicking [butt] and all that stuff. It would be kind of more appropriate for a character that already...

(Cbr) Add Tony Stark’s name to the growing list of people who want to see a Black Widow movie. “Doesn’t Scarlett deserve a break?” actor Robert Downey Jr. told USA Today with a laugh. “Look, I think that the interesting thing, particularly after "Guardians" with Zoe [Saldana], [or] even from the first "Iron Man" where Pepper was kind of this really – to me the "Iron Man" franchise would never have taken off without [Gwyneth] Paltrow. A lot has been made lately about "Hey, where are all the female superheroes?" Both DC and Marvel have declared interest in answering that question, with DC firing the first- and most prominent shot- by casting Gal Gadot and saying she'll appear as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as well as her own standalone film. Meanwhile at Marvel, all we've ever gotten is some "We'll see" lip service, regarding Scarlett Johannson getting a spinoff Black Widow film.
With her stock at an all-time high, since her Lucy sent Dwayne Johnson's Hercules home with his lion head hung low, the question of why Marvel has been so gun shy about a solo film for her has never been more pressing. One person who happens to be on the Black Widow bandwagon is Marvel's reigning marquee star, Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr has voiced his support for a solo Black Widow movie.
The idea of a standalone film for Scarlett Johansson's character has gathered support this year following her expanded role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with Marvel Studios' hesitation playing into a wider debate about the lack of female superheroes in cinema.
"Doesn't Scarlett deserve a break?" Downey Jr said to USA Today, referencing the fact that Johansson is about to become a mother, before admitting that it would be "appropriate" for her to lead her own film given the success of her recent projects at the box office.

So when in the world will Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow character get her own stand-alone movie? She's been a big part of at least three released Marvel films and one upcoming one after all.
Now, her co-star Robert Downey Jr. has revealed his thoughts on the topic during a recent interview with USA Today, saying the actress deserves some time off - especially considering she's about to have her first child:

As you may have seen, a news story coming out of Chicago made the rounds across the internet this past weekend, claiming that 112 people had been murdered by a group of teens whose killing spree was inspired by The Purge: Anarchy (review).
It's precisely those kinds of stories that give horror movies a bad name, but thankfully, this one wasn't legit.
The website Cream Bmp Daily reported on the story Friday, which was packed with alleged quotes from both civilians and police officers.
The mass killing was described as a re-enactment of The Purge: Anarchy, taking place shortly after the movie hit theaters on Friday night. The site reported that no arrests had been made and that police would be closely monitoring social media sites, waiting for the teenage killers to brag about their crimes.
Fortunately, the obviously fake story was shortly thereafter debunked by The Epoch Times, who revealed...

Telefilm Canada has confirmed its financial support of nearly $13 million of Canadian tax payers' money towards the production of nine English-language feature films through the 'Canada Feature Film Fund', although there doesn't seem to be anything culturally 'Canadian' about most of their selections, other than the crews that will be working on them.
Among the films receiving money include a psycho horror with a demonic 'Santa Claus', a bio pic about a former Queen of Sweden, the 'relationship' between 'James Dean' and a photographer, a thriller involving a Satanic child abuse sex ring, and an inflatable Sex Doll drug smuggling story:
The films are "After the Ball" (Sean Garrity), "A Christmas Horror Story" (Steven Hoban, Grant Harvey, Brett Sullivan), "Aloft" (Claudia Llosa), "A Worthy Companion" (Jason Sanchez, Carlos Sanchez), "Life" (Anton Corbijn), "Regression" (Alejandro Amenabar), "Rest Home" (Michael Rowe), "The Girl King" (Mika Kaurismäki) and "Zoom" (Pedro Morelli...

We told you a couple of weeks ago that Universal and Blumhouse would be taking the special mobile attraction "The Purge: Breakout" to several cities across the country, and right now we have a trailer and more! Check it out!
"The Purge: Breakout" is an immersive escape-game experience based on the world of Universal Pictures' The Purge.
It's Purge Night, and your group is being held captive by a demented torturer... with only 30 minutes before the start of The Purge. Trapped in his house, groups must work together—solving a series of increasingly complicated mind-bending puzzles and clues—to escape captivity and survive The Purge. Based on popular escape room adventures taking the U.S. and Asia by storm, the experience is like a real life video game. Visitors will be completely immersed into a horror experience like no other.

We're seeing more and more creative marketing techniques these days, and to entice moviegoers to experience The Purge: Anarchy first-hand this summer, Universal and Blumhouse will be taking the special mobile attraction "The Purge: Breakout" to several cities across the country.
Per THR, the immersive experience will place people inside the annual Purge Night, 12 hours every year when all crime is legal. Groups of visitors will be held captive by a demented psychopath 30 minutes before the purge begins and must work together to solve a series of increasingly complicated, mind-bending puzzles to escape captivity.
"Our goal with 'The Purge: Breakout' is to bring the universe of The Purge films directly to the audience," Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum said. "This experience allows fans across the county the chance to immerse themselves in the intricate world that the series' writer-director, James DeMonaco, has so painstakingly crafted. We hope that they enjoy being scared out of their minds.

With a $90 million gross on just a $3 million budget, a sequel to James DeMonaco’s The Purge was always going to be inevitable. Now, one year later, we have The Purge: Anarchy. With DeMonaco back behind the camera and a fresh cast in front, can the film repeat the same success that its predecessor saw? Judging by this newly released trailer, yes, yes it can.
This time around, Frank Grillo will be our protagonist and like Ethan Hawke’s character from the last film, he will face a Purge. For those unfamiliar with the term, a Purge is a special night of the year where citizens can commit any crimes they want and get away with it. The catch is that for the other 364 days of the year they must live in peace and harmony.
Whereas the original took place mostly in a house, the sequel looks to take place mostly on the streets,...

Joss Whedon’s Firefly is perhaps one of the greatest cult series’ to have ever graced our TV screens. This space western drama – based around the fallout of a civil war (the Unification War), smuggling and the opposition of the superpower known as the Alliance (or the Central Federal Government) – was cancelled after only eleven of its fourteen episodes and has since become a cult show, resulting in the release of a film, Serenity (2005), a line of graphic novels and even a role-playing game.
The show is set in a new star system in the year 2517 and follows the crew of the ship Serenity, a firefly class of craft. Aboard the ship are, as Whedon describes them, “Nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things”. Led by the ship’s Captain and former Independent Army Sergeant Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), are his second-in-command and war-time...

"American Horror Story: Coven" brings us a fun Halloween offering, delving more into various characters' backstories plus adding a delightfully creepy cliffhanger.
Fiona Goode and the Supremes
The Council has come to town to investigate Madison's disappearance. Nan called them because she can no longer "hear" Madison in her head. Myrtle (Frances Conroy) is the head of the council and she's had a rivalry with Fiona since they were classmates at Miss Robichaux's back in the 1970s. Myrtle has always suspected Fiona killed Annaleigh in order to take her place as Supreme and now she suspects she killed Madison.
Myrtle is right, of course, but it turns out butler Spaulding has been in love with Fiona since way back when and he's willing to protect her -- even if it meant cutting out his own tongue 40 years ago to keep him from being compelled to testify against Fiona to the then-Council.

It's hard to believe "Newsies" has been around since 1992. Directed by choreographer Kenny Ortega (who you can also thank for the the "High School Musical" series), the film was a major box office flop, but later gained a cult following on home video. Now, it's been turned into a Broadway musical that has earned eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, winning Best Choreography and Best Original Score.

Usually, I rectify the situation as quickly as possible, but sometimes, life gets in the way, and for whatever reason, it takes me longer than expected, at which time I all too often find out that it wasn’t worth the wait, and my expectations weren’t met. You see, back in 2002, work schedules and family issues had kept me from indulging in what was being heralded as the greatest science fiction phenomenon since Star Wars. I didn’t catch Firefly for a long while, always telling myself I would eventually see it, especially since every other geek on the planet was so rabid about how wonderful it was. For their 9th annual edition, the Atlanta Underground Film Festival will be assaulting the south from its Goat Farm Arts Center screening center on Sep. 13-16 with four days and nights of independent feature films, shorts and documentaries.
Some of the feature films screening include Lisa Duva’s multi-dimensional Cat Scratch Fever, Jason Lapeyre’s thriller Cold Blooded and Brady Hall’s hilariously named Hello, My Name Is Dick Licker.
This year’s Auff is also packed to the gills with short films with multiple blocks of shorts screening per day. Some of the special ones to look out for are Neil Ira Needleman‘s A Few Words in Favor of God, Jim Haverkamp‘s When Walt Whitman Was a Little Girl and Mike Salva‘s award-winning animated short Pound Dogs.
The full film lineup is below, but please visit the official Atlanta Underground Film Festival website for more details and to buy advance tickets.
