Sick, twisted and politically incorrect, the animated series features the adventures of the Griffin family. Endearingly ignorant Peter and his stay-at-home wife Lois reside in Quahog, R.I., and have three kids. Meg, the eldest child, is a social outcast, and teenage Chris is awkward and clueless when it comes to the opposite sex. The youngest, Stewie, is a genius baby bent on killing his mother and destroying the world. The talking dog, Brian, keeps Stewie in check while sipping martinis and sorting through his own life issues. Written by Jwelch5742

Did You Know?

Throughout the series, references have been made to the fact that some characters voices sound similar due to them being voiced by the same person. In season six, episode four, "Believe It or Not, Joe's Walking on Air", Peter tells Dr. Hartman that his voice sounds similar to Carter Pewterschmidt (both voiced by Seth MacFarlane). In season fourteen, episode three, "Guy, Robot", Carl does an impression of Archer from the television series Archer (2009), and Bob from the television series Bob's Burgers (2011), who are all voiced by the same person, H. Jon Benjamin. See more »

Seasons 1 and 2: Twisted and outrageous, but just not The Simpsons
17 August 2009 | by gizmomogwaiSee all my reviews

One might expect I'd find no entertainment in this show; I don't like bathroom humour and I think cultural references often get dated. Family Guy has a lot of both those things. For example, a fart joke is pretty much all there is to it to the conclusion of the episode The King is Dead; and the show regularly parodies commercials from ten years ago. But it also has a good sense of humour about other kinds of things. Even when it's not bathroom humour, it is still shock humour, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some thought must go into choosing what gags to use in order to amuse and shock. To this end, we have Peter pushing Lois down the stairs after she says she's not pregnant (Da Boom), we have the very twisted scene where Peter tries to breastfeed baby Stewie (I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar), and Brian the dog and Lois discussing if they'd commit bestiality if they were drunk (Brian in Love). Some of the humour targets racists, sexists, religious fanatics (Chitty Chitty Death Bang, Holy Crap), and elitists (Peter Peter Caviar Eater)- often, worthy of being mocked.

Don't get me wrong, though. While I think some thought has to go into crafting Family Guy, I don't mean the show is brilliant or complex. It is not as deep as The Simpsons. The Simpsons regularly uses the theme of family members disliking each other at times but loving each other anyway, which was clearly articulated in Lisa's Wedding (season 6). Family Guy does the same thing, but expressed in a less subtle way in Holy Crap. Family Guy is like hardcore Simpsons; it's still funny but there's a lot less heart. Family Guy would never be capable of producing an episode like Lisa's Substitute (The Simpsons) or The Sting (Futurama).

In terms of the characters, many are similar to the Simpsons. Peter Griffin is a dumber, fatter version of Homer Simpson, for example. Because I take more interest in intelligent characters, the two best characters are the baby Stewie and the dog Brian, both of whom can talk. Stewie is brilliant but sadistic, evil, and perpetually angry. Is he too extreme (for example, when he tries to kill his mother)? Well, every show needs a villain, and he's much like Mr. Burns. Brian, on the other hand, is the voice of reason, much like Lisa Simpson. These two are rivals and also have good interactions, in fact getting a whole episode to themselves, Road to Rhode Island. The Simpsons rarely had Mr. Burns and Lisa interact, except for the classic episode The Old Man and the Lisa. Stewie's eulogy in Road to Rhode Island is hilariously inappropriate. An 8 out of 10 for volume 1.
