Emmy Nomination Burning Questions: How Far Can ‘This Is Us,’ Millie Bobby Brown and ‘SNL’ Ride Their Waves?
It feels like Emmy season has already been going on for months – and it technically has, thanks to For Your Consideration events, which started in the spring, but now will pick up in intensity and frequency. For now it’s truly showtime: Phase One ballots have been sent to the more than 20,000 members of the Television Academy, and voting is underway.

After all the screenings, campaigning and coverage, it’s now up to the voters to decide. The ultimate category nominations will be revealed on Thursday, July 13, at the Television Academy’s Saban Theatre in North Hollywood. (And then we’re on to the final competition!)

But before the first round of voting ends on June 26, here are some of this year’s burning questions inside the Primetime Emmy race:

Who will benefit from the “Game of Thrones” vacuum?

‘American Gods’: How They Crafted Superhero TV for Adults

In new television series “American Gods,” adapted by showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green from Neil Gaiman’s 2001 novel about the epic battle between the Old and New Gods, we have a superhero fantasy for adults. In this Starz drama, the Old are obsessed with faith, the New with branding.

Costume designer Suttirat Larlarb and cinematographer Darran Tiernan felt they needed to ground the Gods in a believable reality before going wild with visual eye candy. That meant using protagonist Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) as an anchor. He’s a former convict with a crisis of faith, who’s recruited to protect con artist Mr. Wednesday/Odin (Ian McShane).

Dressing the Old and New Gods

“I was harboring a low level anxiety about the project because, from the outset, we’re given a host of characters who exist in reality but are supernatural,” said Larlarb. “And they have to exist among living,

‘Legion’: Aubrey Plaza Reveals How David Bowie and Beetlejuice Helped Her Become a ‘Rock Star’ Monster

‘Legion’: Aubrey Plaza Reveals How David Bowie and Beetlejuice Helped Her Become a ‘Rock Star’ Monster
“I mean, I just coughed a feather up like five minutes ago,” said Aubrey Plaza.

That’s the price the actress had to pay for working on the FX’s series “Legion” in which her character rips open a pillow in a mad, choreographed dream sequence that all takes place in the subconscious of David Haller (Dan Stevens).

“I was so far gone and wrapped up in that character… that I just started knifing that pillow open, and the feathers just kind of exploded into my face and I inhaled a bunch of them…But I was coughing up feathers like an animal for a while, and it was kind of scary because I had a lot of them in my lung. It was very Looney Tunes.”

‘Documentary Now!’: The Secrets to Recreating Film History the Right Way
IFC’s “Documentary Now!” has always gone for more than the cheap laugh. While it’s a mockumentary of public-tv programming and the documentaries they feature, the real pleasure lies in watching how it will create homages to great nonfiction filmmaking.

“We really wanted you to be clicking through the channels, landing on our show and thinking that it is a real documentary, and then suddenly say, ‘Hey, hold on for a minute — that’s Fred Armisen, what’s he doing in this documentary?'” said Alexander Buono, the executive producer who has co-directed and served as cinematographer on every episode of the show’s two seasons.

Buono and his fellow co-director, executive producer Rhys Thomas, started their collaboration on “Saturday Night Live” where every week they were charged with creating send-ups of everything from a suspense drama to a pharmaceutical commercial to a music video.

Big Little Lies.” “Twin Peaks.” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

These three projects don’t make up half of Laura Dern’s 2017 body of work, but they do represent defining moments in the year’s entertainment landscape. Few movies or TV shows have been met with as much anticipation or scrutiny, and this level of intense speculation can be tough on an actor who’s been sworn to secrecy.

“A woman came up to me and said, ‘You don’t even tell your kids what part you played? Is that painful as a mother to have to lie to your kids?’ And I got so flustered!” Dern said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “I’m not trying to hurt people by not talking about it!”

‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’: Rachel Bloom Doesn’t Care If You Consider Her in New Emmys Music Video — Watch

‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’: Rachel Bloom Doesn’t Care If You Consider Her in New Emmys Music Video — Watch
Leave it to the folks behind “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” to come up with an Emmys campaign video that takes the air out of all other campaign videos. Back in April, the show kicked off Emmys season with a night of live performances from the main cast (you have not truly lived until you’ve seen Donna Lynne Champlin sing “Maybe This Dream” for an audience).

As the show preps for Season 3, star Rachel Bloom’s latest music video is a (non-)Fyc song about staying true to artistic standards in the face of the pressures of an awards push. But because it comes from Bloom, it also definitely has deep-cut theater references and fun jokes about kissing people.

Marvel's New Anime Marvel Future Avengers is Coming Out This Summer

East and West collide, it seems, in more ways than one. The western comics of Marvel have announced that they are continuing production with an Avengers Anime, and it looks like it could be a good combination.

Madhouse Studios, who is in charge of making the new series, has done some good work in the past with Marvel anime, but nothing has really been a huge hit. I think a large part of that has to do with it focusing too much on the old and not enough on bringing something new to the table. They aren't making the same mistake this time.

The series is called Marvel Future Avengers and stars many of the Avengers that we know and love including Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, and the Wasp, and mixes them with a new group of young kids with powers. The main kid is Makoto, a child

Deadly Pleasures: Friday The 13th Part VII – The New Blood (1988)

I’ve waited a long time for this (cracks knuckles). This argument has been a long time coming, but I know that I’m ready (cracks neck). I’m ready to make a case for an overlooked, often derided film from the Friday the 13th series (tapes fists). That’s right, I’m here in defense of Friday the 13th Part VII – The New Blood. And you know what? I’m confident that I’m going to sway at least a few of you (does series of calisthenics so as not to pull a muscle).

Usually mocked as “Carrie vs. Jason,” many people dismiss this entry as a sloppy attempt by an FX guy trying his hand at directing. Most know that John Carl Buechler places the blame on the MPAA for cutting out all of his beloved gore, but they are often quick to point out that the movie
