Why Has Real World Quietly Disappeared From MTV?

  • Popsugar
Oh where, oh where has Real World gone? The longest-running program in MTV history usually airs a new season every year, but it's now been over a year since its 32nd season, Real World Seattle: Bad Blood, ended in early 2017. Three back-to-back seasons of The Challenge have even aired in that time without any mention of Real World's fate. Between Siesta Key, Are You the One?, Floribama Shore, and Winter Break: Hunter Mountain, MTV seems to have its hands full, and we've begun to wonder if Real World will even return from its hiatus.

Johnny Bananas on That Time He Did Drag – and If He’ll Go on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ (Video)

Johnny Bananas, the long-running, six-time winner of MTV’s reality show “The Challenge,” has seen and done it all. And as we learned Thursday night, yes, even “tucking.”

“I know what tucking is. I have,” Bananas, whose real real name Johnny Devenanzio, told TheWrap’s Matt Donnelly on Thursday. “I did boy-lesque. I looked phenomenal.”

Bananas spoke on TheWrap’s Emmys Outstanding Reality Competition Panel at the Landmark Theatres in Los Angeles along with “Project Runway” executive producer Sara Rea and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” executive producer Fenton Bailey. So naturally, Bailey asked Bananas if he’d ever done drag and if he “tucked.”

‘Project Runway’ Executive Producer Talks Season 16 Cheating Scandal (Video)

‘Project Runway’ Executive Producer Talks Season 16 Cheating Scandal (Video)
The challenge for any show after 16 seasons is finding ways to keep it fresh and to mitigate problems that arise. “Project Runway” Season 16 had a real disaster on its hands when one of the contestants was booted from the show for cheating.

But executive producer Sara Rea explained how they took this potentially fatal scandal and turned it into one of their best seasons.

“You put it on camera. If you can at all, put the disaster on camera. Because you make your problem entertaining,” Rea told TheWrap’s Matt Donnelly on Thursday. “This season we had a big cheating scandal, and I was like ‘s— what do we do?’ And we just turned the cameras on. Roll on everything, we rolled behind the scenes, and we had such strong on-camera talent that they can manage those things when the train jumps the rail. The biggest rule is, keep all the drama on camera.

Why the Queens of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Are the ‘Marines of Reality Television’ (Video)

Why the Queens of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Are the ‘Marines of Reality Television’ (Video)
RuPaul once said his show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” could never go “mainstream.” And yet the show has found success for 10 seasons and inspired entire generations of people to embrace drag.

Executive producer Fenton Bailey has been heartened that kids as young as 10 years old have grown up with the show and are now competing on their runways. And he says that while drag may not be “mainstream,” it is universal.

“We’re all born naked, and the rest is drag,” Bailey told TheWrap’s Matt Donnelly on Thursday, quoting RuPaul. “And the idea that everything you put on from the moment you step out of the house is a statement, is something about yourself. I think that drag is ultimately universally relatable. It isn’t so much about it being mainstream, because all of us … we can always shock people, outrage people, stimulate people, by what we wear.”

MTV's 'Ex on the Beach' Cast Includes Reality Stars and Normal Folks, All of Whom Are in for a Cruel Twist!

The new dating reality show Ex on the Beach is exactly what it sounds like. Quoth one contestant as she sees a dude emerging from the surf, "Oh my god, that's my f--king ex." Even better, the Ex on the Beach cast is filled with names you'll likely recognize. (And we're not just talking about host Romeo Miller.) MTV bills the show as a "social experiment" with "10 romantically embattled reality stars [and] everyday singles who show up for what they think is a run-of-the-mill love and dating show in paradise, only to be completely blindsided by their exes (in some cases multiple) face-to-face. A complicated web of hookups, deceit, revenge, and drama unfolds against the sultry backdrop as couples decide if their love can be reignited,
