Matt Youngberg is an American artist and writer that has been working in the animation industry since the early-2000s, having been involved with shows like Batman Beyond, X-Men: Evolution, and Teen Titans. An avid fan of the original DuckTales series, Youngberg grew up drawing the characters he watched every afternoon on television.
Francisco Angones is a fellow American writer that has also been working in the television and animation industry, albeit since the early 2010s instead, with his credits including Men at Work and the severely underrated Disney Xd’s Wander Over Yonder. An uber-fan of the original DuckTales series, Angones sang the theme song in his first grade talent show, incorporated lyrics from the theme song into his wedding vows, and his oldest daughter’s first words were “Woo-oo!”

“We are seeing consumption grow exponentially in totality,l but it’s really coming from other platforms” like video on demand and connected devices, said the president of Turner’s Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang. Kids want “to consume content on their time in the way that they want, and we need to be there.”
The Time Warner-owned unit is revealing its programming plans as the TV industry focuses on what is known as the “kids’ upfront,” or the advance sale of
Creators Mark McCorkle and Robert Schooley, whose other credits include Big Hero 6: The Series and The Penguins of Madagascar, are penning the screenplay for the live-action Kim Possible movie. So now, after a relationship of many years, Cartoon Network, which just celebrated its 25 anniversary last fall, has worked with the school to create an annual scholarship totaling $15,000 for pair of deserving students with an eye toward keeping the animation talent well filled.
“We tap into talent from everywhere, but a lot of the CalArts talent in particular has risen up to places of show creators like Genndy and Craig,” says Cartoon Network senior VP and general manager Brian Miller. “And that list continues to expand with people like Pen Ward and J.G. Quintel (“Regular Show”), and further from there to Daniel Chong (“We Bare Bears”), and it just continues.”

Ben Schwartz has been cast as Leonardo. I greatly disliked Schwartz’s character Jean-Ralphio on Parks and Recreation, but that’s because he did such a great job, and while I normally wouldn’t like the idea of him being Leo, but it sounds like some changes are being made to the show to make it fresh. Leo is no longer the leader, but rather the cooler, rebellious brother while Raphael (voiced by Omar Miller) takes charge as leader. Donatello (voiced by Silicon Valley's Josh Brener) and still seems to be a techno-geek and Brandon Mychal Smith’s Michelangelo sounds like he’ll be the lovable Mikey we know.
In addition, to the turtles,
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will star Omar Miller (Ballers) as Raphael, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Leonardo, Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) as Donatello, Brandon Mychal Smith (You’re The Worst) as Michelangelo and Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) as April O’Neil. Eric Bauza, who voiced multiple characters on the network’s 3D version, returns as Splinter.
The new series follows the four turtles-turned-superheroes as they unlock the mystical secrets of New York City, battle new mutants and find the ultimate slice of pizza. The re-imagined series will also breathe new life into the longtime characters, with Raphael turned into an enthusiastic leader full of bravado, Leonardo becoming a charming rebel, Donatello as the ultimate tech wiz, and Michelangelo embracing his colorful artistic personality. The series will also introduce the first African American April.
