Hulu New Releases: January 2021

Hulu New Releases: January 2021
A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.

Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.

Thankfully Hulu’s library titles are a bit livelier this month. Jan. 1 sees the arrival of Blade Runner: The Final Cut,

The Haunting: Season Three? Netflix Series Creator on Anthology's Future

The Haunting Of Bly Manor Creator Says There Are No Plans For More Seasons

The Haunting Of Bly Manor Creator Says There Are No Plans For More Seasons
The Haunting of Bly Manor is certainly more of a Gothic romance than the straightforward horror of predecessor Hill House, but the latest outing in Mike Flanagan’s anthology series was every bit as rewarding, enjoyable and purely entertaining as what came before.

Indeed, the second chapter dominated Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched list and left viewers terrified for weeks, with many finding themselves not able to sleep at night. The concept to morph the show into an anthology program was a stroke of genius, too, as it increased the longevity of The Haunting and also allows Flanagan to have creative freedom to take subsequent chapters in any number of directions.

Currently, the horror expert is putting the finishing touches on his next Netflix project Midnight Mass, which will reunite him with several of his regular collaborators and centers on an isolated island community who have their world turned upside down when a mysterious priest arrives,

Haunting Of Hill House: 10 Classic Horror Franchises That Deserve The TV Show Treatment

Haunting Of Hill House: 10 Classic Horror Franchises That Deserve The TV Show Treatment
Not many shows could cement their presence in the horror genre. Netflix's The Haunting Of Hill House, however, changed the game, earning rave reviews and developing a fandom of its own. With a sequel series titled The Haunting Of Bly Manor, the series has turned out to be a successful franchise. The first season, created and directed by horror maestro Mike Flanagan, was a reworking of Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name. The novel had earlier been adapted into a less memorable film in 1999, simply titled The Haunting.

But the Haunting franchise has proven the marketability of horror shows in creating engaging narratives, driven by high-production value. It would interesting to see a few more shows reinterpreting some classic horror franchises, in the same vein as Bates Motel, Hannibal, and The Exorcist.

Happiest Season (Clea DuVall)

Happiest Season, Hollywood’s first major lesbian Christmas rom-com, has everything you’d expect from a Christmas movie: snow; sweaters; mismatched family members coming together under one roof; characters saying they hate Christmas and then succumbing to holiday cheer; conflict; satisfying resolution. Director and co-writer Clea DuVall embraces cliches, but filtering them through a lesbian perspective allows old tropes to gain new context. Family dysfunction carries extra weight when viewed through the lens of heteronormativity. The happy couple’s falling-out hits deeper because it’s wrought with the anxiety of coming out. Their fairytale ending feels all the more precious because it’s hard won,

The Haunting Of Bly Manor Creator Praises Netflix’s Hit New Horror Movie

The Haunting Of Bly Manor Creator Praises Netflix’s Hit New Horror Movie
Mike Flanagan knows a thing or two about horror, having built up a reputation as one of the genre’s premiere auteurs over the last decade by scaring audiences witless with the likes of Oculus, Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil, and proved just as adept at the more cerebral and existential aspects of filmmaking with Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep.

He’s no stranger to finding massive success of Netflix, either, after creating the streaming service’s The Haunting anthology series, and both Hill House and Bly Manor scored widespread critical acclaim and racked up huge viewership numbers in the process. The 42 year-old is currently hard at work on his next Netflix project Midnight Mass, but recently took some time to praise Remi Weekes’ phenomenal His House.

The low budget chiller was released right around Halloween, and freaked out subscribers around the world on its way to cracking the Top 10 most-watched list.

Twister Director Says He Isn’t Sold On The Idea Of A Remake

Twister Director Says He Isn’t Sold On The Idea Of A Remake
Jan de Bont may have vanished off the face of the Hollywood map after directing three duds in a row with Speed 2: Cruise Control, The Haunting and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, but his first two movies will always hold a special place in the hearts of a certain generation, and those with a soft spot for spectacle cinema in general.

Speed may have been his calling card that still endures as one of the finest actioners ever made, but Twister was his biggest hit, raking in close to half a billion dollars at the box office. The $90 million disaster epic arrived at a time where CGI wasn’t as ubiquitous as it is now, and the movie straddles the line between computer generated destruction and old school practical effects.

There’s also a charming Bill Paxton lead performance, a stellar ensemble cast and plenty of
