Camille A. Brown (‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ & ‘Once on This Island’ choreographer) on the beauty of ‘bodies moving together’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

“It was really just about how you push the story forward. How does the movement help to tell the story?” says choreographer Camille A. Brown about her work on NBC’s live concert production of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which aired on Easter Sunday, April 1. But the rock opera has a long history going back to its first Broadway production in 1971, so she also wanted to bring a “fresh perspective” to it. Watch our exclusive interview with Brown above.

Superstar” was staged in front of a live audience at the Marcy Avenue Armory in Brooklyn, New York, but Brown also had to consider how it would play to a TV audience. “I’ve never done television before so I was learning as I was going,” she explains. It was also the largest cast she had ever choreographed for, which made it a doubly ambitious undertaking. She was inspired by social dance “where there’s a structure,

The Show | Jesus Christ Superstar Live (April 1, 2018)

The Performance | Good god almighty, did NBC choose the right person to play Judas in its Jesus Christ Superstar Live or what? Broadway mainstay/Power actor Dixon brought history’s most famous betrayer to vivid life in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock opera, broadcast Easter Sunday, and we just can’t stop thinking about his captivating performance.

Though there were bigger names in the cast — John Legend, Sara Bareilles, Alice Cooper — we couldn’t take our eyes off Dixon from the minute he hit the stage.

‘Jesus Christ Superstar’: Will Sara Bareilles, Alice Cooper & Brandon Victor Dixon break Emmy curse for live musical actors?

NBC’s live production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” broadcast on Easter Sunday, April 1, to excellent reviews (with a current MetaCritic score of 81). In recent years these live theatrical shows have become more popular on broadcast TV, and a few of them have gone on to win Emmys, like Fox’s “Grease Live” and NBC’s own “Hairspray.” But they haven’t broken through in movie/limited series acting categories yet. That could change this year with standout performers Sara Bareilles, Brandon Victor Dixon and Alice Cooper entering wide-open supporting races.

It’s true that John Legend could be nominated for and win Best Movie/Mini Actor for his leading role as Jesus, and he would gain Egot status in the process, but that race is stacked with admired A-list actors like Al Pacino (“Paterno”), Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“Patrick Melrose” and “The Child in Time“), Antonio Banderas (“Genius:

Meet the Scene-Stealing Actor Who Played Judas in NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar Live

From the title of the musical alone, you might think Jesus Christ Superstar would be primarily about Jesus himself, and to some extent it is. But much of Andrew Lloyd Webber's iconic rock opera is dedicated to the story of Judas, who emerges as a more sympathetic character than you might expect as the show goes on. During NBC's re-telling of the musical, which aired live on Sunday night from Brooklyn, the actor who played Judas also ended up being one of the evening's biggest scene-stealers: Brandon Victor Dixon.

While the immensely talented leads John Legend (Jesus) and Sara Bareilles (Mary Magdalene) had the audience on their feet, it was Dixon's incredible performances of songs like "Superstar" and "Judas' Death" that truly elevated Jesus Christ Superstar Live. So, where have you seen the 36-year-old actor before?

The musical, which aired Sunday night, had just about everyone taking to Twitter to share some hilarious and not-so religious opinions about Jesus Christ and the muscular characters, but Dixon stood out as a shining star, and it's not just because of his fashion choices. No One Can Get Enough of Alice Cooper's Mic-Dropping King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar

There were no shortage of exceptional performances in NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar Live on Sunday night. John Legend and Sara Bareilles knocked it out of the park as Jesus and Mary Magdalene, respectively, while Brandon Victor Dixon's scene-stealing Judas had us bowing down thanks to his glittery rendition of "Superstar." Of all the characters in the show, however, it seemed like fans couldn't get enough of Alice Cooper's King Herod, who ended up being one of the evening's most unexpected delights.

The singer, songwriter, and overall rock god has spent the last fifty or so years simultaneously shocking and charming the music world with his raspy voice and performances full of fake blood and guillotines, so the choice to cast him as King Herod in an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical might have seemed like it was coming out of left field. That being said, as soon as

Emmy spotlight: Brandon Victor Dixon (‘Jesus Christ Superstar’) brings Tony-winning theater chops to ‘majestic’ role as Judas Iscariot

NBC’s live April 1 production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” came with the combined star-wattage of A-list musicians John Legend as Jesus, Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdelene and Alice Cooper as King Herod. But the story on Monday morning might be Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus and stole the show out from under him too.

While Legend, Bareilles and Cooper are best known for their work in recording studios, Dixon is best known for his performances on the stage. He made his Broadway debut as Harpo in the original production of “The Color Purple,” which ran from 2005-2008. He was nominated for his first Tony for that role, Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 2006, though he lost to Christian Hoff for “Jersey Boys.”

He followed that with “Motown,” in which he played Berry Gordy from 2013-2014, and then “Shuffle Along” (2016), which earned him his second Tony

Jesus Christ Superstar Live: The 'Fever Dream' of Judas' Big Number Explained

Jesus Christ Superstar Live: The 'Fever Dream' of Judas' Big Number Explained
“You know, it’s not the easiest thing to sing,” Jesus Christ Superstar Live‘s Brandon Victor Dixon says of the late-in-the-musical showstopper “Superstar.” He chuckles. “But I do love singing it.”

As viewers of Sunday’s live broadcast saw, the number takes place after Judas has committed suicide, unable to live with his guilt for being an elemental part of Jesus’ death. And when TVLine talked with Dixon on the afternoon of his first rehearsal at Brooklyn’s Marcy Armory, he couldn’t wait to run through the song on the big stage.

“It’s a really cool number.

NBC’s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar Live’ Blends the Crafts

If NBC were looking for a higher-stakes musical to broadcast live on TV, it’s hard to imagine the Peacock landing a bigger fish than “Jesus Christ Superstar.” The rock opera musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice has been revered and reviled over the course of its 47-year history, and the network’s faith in being able to pull off a one-time-only performance at the Brooklyn Armory on April 1 is tantamount to suggesting it can turn water into wine.

Fortunately, “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” is riding on more than faith. Producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan (“Hairspray Live,

In Tribute: Sridevi Kapoor – The Legend of a Superstar

As the morning of 24th February 2018 broke, I like many other started our day as any other day. With no regard to what was about to break on our social media feed. Our first reaction; denial. There is no way this is true. It’s a hoax. However, it was not to be. One by one, official accounts confirmed the Sri Devi had passed away. Wherever you were, whatever language you spoke. It was time to say goodbye to a heroine.

The north-south divide within the Indian film and music scene has not made it easy to find examples of people who succeed in being a force in both. However, there is no doubt that Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan, better known to audiences as Sridevi Kapoor has been one of, if not the most, prominent. Her work spanned nearly 40 years of Indian cinema as both actress and producer, starting as

Music and Audience Take Center Stage in NBC’s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert’

Don’t expect NBC’s staging of “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” on Easter Sunday to look much like the live musicals that NBC has presented since “The Sound of Music Live” proved a runaway hit in December 2013.

The show this time around will be presented largely as a rock concert in a amphitheater-like setting, originating from the cavernous New York State Armory in Brooklyn. Stage director David Leveaux said the presentation is designed to deliver a true rock opera.

“The entire thing is told emotionally through music,” Leveaux said Tuesday, during a press event in New York to promote the April 1 event.

Hong Kong Films Face Challenges in Mainland China

Hong Kong Films Face Challenges in Mainland China
The old formula that made Hong Kong cinema successful decades ago no longer works in mainland China, with fewer films produced by the city’s veteran filmmakers becoming major box office hits. One sign: some big-cast productions are being trashed in online posts.

But smaller films by a new generation of Hong Kong filmmakers might have a chance as mainland tastes become more sophisticated — that is, if they can get past the censor.

A quick survey of China’s 2017 box office shows that only two films by Hong Kong filmmakers made it to the top 10: “Kung Fu Yoga,” a mainland-India co-production directed by Stanley Tong and starring Jackie Chan, grossed more than 1.75 billion yuan ($277.6 million), the fifth-highest grossing film of the year in China; and “Journey to the West: Demon Chapter,” a mainland-Hong Kong co-production directed by Tsui Hark, which grossed nearly $269.6 million.

Bigger mainland-Hong Kong co-productions such as Wilson Yip’s action pic “Paradox” and crime

China Box Office: Aamir Khan’s ‘Secret Superstar’ Wins Quiet Weekend
Aamir Khan’s “Secret Superstar” bounced back to top spot at the Chinese box office in what was the quietest cinemagoing weekend for over a year.

The Indian drama scored $10.5 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Ent Group. It replaced “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” as the top film.

That outcome nevertheless lifted the 17-day total for “Secret Superstar” to $89.9 million. While it has no chance of getting near the $190 million China total of Khan’s “Dangal,” the Chinese score for “Secret Superstar” is more than four times its $20.3 million rest of the world performance.

Superstar” scored strongest on Saturday and Sunday, having been beaten on Friday, the second day of release for newcomer “Till the End of the World.” An action adventure set in the Antarctic, “Till the End of the World” released on Friday. It scored $9.91 between Friday and Sunday and finished with a four-day cumulative of $11.5 million.
