The Terrytoons are oddly interesting, mainly for anybody wanting to see (generally) older cartoons made by lesser known and lower-budget studios. They are a mixed bag in quality, with some better than others, often with outstanding music and with some mild amusement and charm and variable in animation, characterisation and content.
'Popcorn' is a pretty good start, if not something that will blow one's socks off, for the 1931 Terrytoons. Much of the previous year's batch of Terrytoons was watchable but unexceptional, with a few decent ones and a few lacklustre ones as well. With the 1931 output starting off quite well, the quality showed promises of being higher.
Admittedly the story is very formulaic and basic with not many surprises. Something that is not unexpected from an early Terrytoon where stories never were a strong point even in the best of them.
The character designs are still a bit crude and simplistic too, again not unexpected. Thankfully, there is not as much cheating or repetition that could be seen early on.
Other than that, there is not a lot wrong here in 'Popcorn'. It is by far one of Terrytoons' better efforts overall up to this point in their filmography, and sees ambition growing and being bolder in their experimenting. This is obvious in anything with the haunted house, which has a macabre eeriness that one would not expect from a Terrytoons judging from the previous ones. The backgrounds are very detailed and appealing to look at.
Also a standout is the music, typically outstanding. It is so beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is great fun to listen to and full of lively energy, doing so well with enhancing the action.
Despite the story not being much special, it is carried along by a lively pace, natural charm and numerous pretty amusing absurdist gags. The characters may not have significant development to them but are not annoying or personality deprived. Great use is made of the beach side amusement park setting, with the high point being the haunted house.
Concluding, pretty good with a good amount of pop and not too much corn. 7/10 Bethany Cox
