Storyline

On the heels of the syndicated success of "Wheel of Fortune (1983)", producer Merv Griffin decided to return his classic quiz show-with-a-twist, "Jeopardy!" to the airwaves in 1984. It, too, was a huge success, and also marked a return to the game's tried-and-true formula of answers and questions (after a slightly-modified remake six years earlier failed to catch on). Three contestants, including a returning champion, competed. Six categories are announced (e.g., Art World, Cooking, 20th Century Republicans, "Friends (1994)", Muscle Men and College Girls Wearing White T-shirts), each having five answers ostensibly graded by difficulty, from $100 to $500. The champion chose a category and dollar amount (e.g., "College Girls Wearing White T-shirts for $100"), to which host Trebek reads the answer ("Inspector 12 must give her seal of approval before a college girl can wear one of these plain white T-shirts"). Contestants had to respond in question form ("What is Hanes?") ; if correct, ... Written by Brian Rathjen <briguy_52732@yahoo.com>

Trivia

In 1984, when Jeopardy! returned on to television, the main theme track was altered from that of the 1984 pilot to become more electronic. The original version of "Think!" was used for Final Jeopardy!. The main theme was remixed with a bongo track for the 1991-1992 tournament games. The remixed version was used full time starting in the 1992-93 season. In 1997, an all-new arrangement for both the main theme and the Final Jeopardy! Round "Think!" music made, with jazzy orchestral arrangements by Steve Kaplan. The main theme was updated again in 2001, with arrangements similar to the previous version. In 2008, an all-new arrangement of both the main theme and "Think!" music was created for the 25th season by Chris Bell Music, Inc. The theme has gone through some slight re-orchestrations since the beginning of the 25th season. Starting October 13, 2008, Jeopardy! began using a different track (from the same package) of the "Think!" music from time to time until it eventually replaced the previous version. The newer version used a piano lead. See more »

The top of the game show biz
8 June 2009 | by See all my reviews

As a kid I watched Jeopardy in its first incarnation with Art Fleming, and it was always first on my list of game shows. It was disappointing to see it disappear, but exciting when it came back in 1984.

The 'new' Jeopardy was just as good as the first version, and Alex Tribek has always delivered a touch of class as the host. Somehow he manages to give the impression that he knows all this stuff, though of course that is patently impossible. Or maybe by this time he's seen all the material enough times that he DOES know it! LOL When it comes to the high concept game show, Jeopardy is pure. The only luck involved is how well a set of categories happens to match the individual knowledge of the contestants, and with 12 categories per game, that mostly averages out.

Measure your own success against the question at the BOTTOM of the board. If you can get 7 of those 12 questions and two thirds of the Final Jeopardies correct consistently, you should test to become a contestant.
