Trama

Ratan and Chaman are twins brothers who love the same girl, Meera. During a fair, all three are separated. While Chaman and Meera are found, Ratan is untraceable. Years later, Chaman is no longer attracted to Meera, but in a dancing girl named Rasily, while Meera awaits word of her childhood sweetheart Ratan, who she feels is still alive. Then the unexpected happens, Chaman gets into a fight with another man, killing him, and is on the run from the police. Misunderstandings are clarified, and the law declares this to be an accidental death, and as a result Chaman returns. But this is not the same Chaman any more. For one thing, he has lost interest in Rasily, and is more interested in Meera - could it be that Ratan has returned in place of Chaman? Ratan and Chaman (Ashok Kumar) are twin brothers kids who love the same girl, Meera (Veena). Ratan has a birth mark on his shoulder. During a storm at a fair, all three are separated. While Chaman and Meera are found, Ratan is untraceable. Years later the kids grow up, Chaman is now a theatre owner and is no longer attracted to Meera, but to a dancing girl named Rassily (Cuckoo), while Meera awaits word of her childhood sweetheart Ratan, who she feels is still alive. Meera's blind dad (Chaman Puri) is sad that Meera is whiling away her youth in wait for a man who might very well be dead. Chatpat (Jeevan) is Chaman's theatre artist.

Meanwhile Ratan has been raised at an orphanage. He is now called Ashok since he lost his memory due to a tree branch falling on his head during the storm at the fair. He is now a magistrate at Gorakhpur. Mohan (Pran) is a rich industrialist, who supports the orphanage financially. Ashok is married to Leela (Kuldip Kaur). Mohan and Ashok are good friends. Mohan though is having an affair with Leela. Ashok goes on a tour to Mussorie.

Now back home, Rassily was flirting with another customer, which made Chaman insanely jealous. The customer had a weak heart and had an attack when Rassily flirted with him. Thats when Chaman came in and stuck him on the head. Rassily took advantage of this and blamed Chaman for the customer's death and panics Chaman into running away. Chaman also goes to Mussorie to hide. Chaman finds Ashok in the same hotel and is intrigued. He gives Ashok some heave dose of sleeping pills with an intention to kill him. Chaman shaves off Ashok's goatee and acquires his clothes and appearance and runs away in his car. The night is heavy with rain and Chaman has a bad car crash.

Meanwhile the hotel calls the doctor, who is able to save Ashok, but the dosage was fatally high and Ashok wakes up a few days later. Ashok is considered as Chaman, the killer on the loose. the doctor feels that Chaman had a mental problem with the high dosage of sleeping pills and hence cant remember who he is. Meanwhile back home, the court agrees that Rassily's customer died due to a heart attack and the case is dismissed. Nobody believes him when he says he is Ashok, and they tell him that Ashok died in an accident a few days ago. Ashok goes to his home and finds Mohan and Leela exchanging romantic tit bits. Ashok is devastated and realizes that they were having an affair well before his supposed "death".

Ashok is roaming about aimlessly in Gorakhpur when Chatpat finds him there (Chatpat was looking for Chaman) and mistakes him for CHaman. Chatpat takes Ashok to Chaman's life. Meera suspects that the man in front is not Chaman. She sees the birthmark on Ashok's chest and knows it is Ratan. Meera tells Ashok that he is in-fact Ratan. But Ashok remembers nothing and this frustrates Meera. Ashok finds that Mohan and Leela are making a statue in his memory. He donates rs 25K as Chaman, to this effort. He says Chaman was Ashok's old friend. Mohan thinks Chaman is a rich person and wants to milk him for even more money. Mohan asks Leela to invite Chaman to the unveiling event. Ashok is now more interested in Meera, and ignores Rassily, who gets insanely jealous. Meera takes Ashok to the same fair, where he was lost. Ashok's regains his memory, and knows he is Ratan and loves Meera. But he pretends to be ignorant since he is a married man.

Ashok writes a play to recite his unique dilemma. But then leaves for Gorakhpur when he gets Leela's invitation. Leela tries to seduce Chaman, who plays along. Thats when Mohan comes in. Ashok plays the same tricks on Mohan. As Chaman, he gives him an investment tip and encourages him to bet everything on silver. He then takes Leela with him to his new house in Delhi. Meera is not happy to see Leela. Ashok then liquidates his sizable investments in silver to cause financial harm to Mohan. His sales cause the market to move, depressing prices for everyone. Mohan finds that Chaman caused this loss to his money. Mohan calls Leela, whose loyalty now lies with Chaman. Mohan is super angry and both. Mohan goes to Delhi to confront Chaman, who reveals that he is Ashok. Mohan loses all his courage and temper. Ashok forgives Mohan and lets him live, but he dies when he slips down the staircase. Ashok enacts his play for Leela, which is based on his life and what Mohan and Leela did to him. Leela runs away. Ashok tells Meera that he is Ratan and that he loves her, but that Leela was Ashok's wife. To resolve the dilemma, Ashok offers 2 vials to Leela, one with poison and one without. He will take on and Leela the other. He wants god to decide who lives and who dies. Leela takes both vials and dies. Ashok/Ratan marries Meera.
