RD Burman was inspired by Pink Floyd's song "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Years later he composed the Bengali song "TUMI KOTO JE DURE KOTHA JE HARIE GELE" with the similar tune. He later used the tune of that Bengali song and composed the background music of Dimple Kapadia swimming in Saagar. Years later RD Burman used the same music and composed a full fledged song. Aaja Mere Jaan was not a movie planned for RD Burman. It was Anuradha Paudwal which had given him the offer to compose an album for her featuring 8 duets .There were 4 singers selected to accompany her. There were SP Balasubramaniam , Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh and Danny Denzongpa. However, then the company sat on those songs and they were not released. One of the songs composed was "AAJA MERI JAAN" which was used as the title song for the movie. 20 years later, Bhushan Kumar got DJ Phukan to compose a new version of the song with singer Mauli. This song was in the movie I Love New Year.
The film was launched with the picturising the song ' jaane do na ' dimple(her comeback film) was very nervous as she was facing the camera after 10 years( before with rishi kapoor) and again with rishi kapoor, there were many retakes. This film was one of few major, kamalhasan films. Shafi inamder played villian and this was one of the last nadira's film. The bathing scene shows dimple is in water actualy she was in swimming pool at midnight. S.m.anwar camera work excellent, he showed magic light during dawn & evening. After bobby, as sagaar was dimple's comeback film, this film was to be released first, but ramesh sippy started to re-shoot the film thus the delay. So dimple's zakhmee sher, manzil manzil aitbaar were released before sagaar.
There was speculation that GP Sippy went bankrupt prior to the film. This was due to Sippy re shooting endlessly. Plus GP was forced to show the film to any distributor who was interested in buying the film. This was something the Sippys never did in the past. GP felt humiliated by doing this.
Even though Javed Akhtar's script was yet to be completed, Dimple Kapadia pressurized Ramesh Sippy to start the film. She went crying to him with tales that of how the industry was predicting that this film would never be made. So the mahurat was hastily done followed by a song picturisedsation, after which there was a gap until the script was ready.
When questioned about his performance in Saagar, Kamal Hassan stated that he did allot of hamming in the film and was surprised Ramesh Sippy did not stop him. When questioned about remaking the film in Tamil, Hassan stated it was a bad idea. He felt Saagar was a just a ordinary love story that was told uniquely and brilliantly by Ramesh Sippy.
