Storyline

18 year old Stefania is brought to a juvenile reformatory for young prostitutes. The institution is actually a prison, and one of the worst and most squalid of its kind. It's a real hell. Two dozens of ragged girls are crammed into a dormitory, locked by a thick iron door, two in each bed. Meals and work is carried out in other sections of the building, separated by iron bars. A young doctor shall investigate the newcomer. When they meet, they immediately recognize each other. It is Giorgos, the doctor that treated Stefania's mother a couple of years ago, and then had a little flirt with Stefania. He has been thinking of her ever since. He immediately falls in love with her, and wants to help her. Stefania is thinking about any possibility to get out from the prison. She flirts with the ugly yard guard Armandos, and with the truck driver coming with foodstuff, but in vain. In a letter she tells Giorgos her sad story, starting with seduction by her stepfather, and ending in ... Written by Maths Jesperson {maths.jesperson1@comhem.se}

Dark, moody and grim study of a young woman's degradation and her stony path towards redemption....
4 February 2012 | by See all my reviews

An attractive young woman is remanded to a harsh and ugly reformatory for wayward girls whose staff is filled with enough hatred and punitive zeal to rival the worst penitentiary for hardened criminals. In flashbacks we learn how she fled a guilty sexual affair with her stepfather, confessing all to her fiancé only to have him start treating her as a whore. Learning how to use her body to manipulate men, she embarks on a brief and successful career as a high class prostitute, only to be nabbed by the police because of her minor status. Zoe Laskari gives a fascinating performance of a hardened young woman who is still young enough to be vulnerable and intelligent enough to calculate how best to leave her hated environment... The film is beautifully shot in black and white, and punctuated with dramatic lighting and a stirring music score. The acting is excellent, even in the minor roles, with frequent scenes of hysteria, violence and hateful emotions convincingly real. Laskari and Focas were teamed in two other films, but this is by far the best. It is a dark, moody and grim study of a young woman's degradation and her stony, difficult path towards redemption which cannot fail to move viewers.
