Sex & Nudity

  • There is nudity scattered throughout the series but it is infrequent. Sex scenes occur even less frequently.
  • Tony has sex with his secretary in his office chair. They kiss and start to get undressed but the act itself is not shown. No nudity.
  • Valentina and Tony have sex a couple times thoughout the show. The scenes in which they do aren't graphic and show very little.
  • One of the main characters runs a strip club called the Badabing! and scenes there contain dancers in the background. Usually out of focus.
  • At one point in the show a character is raped, but it isn't shown. Only discussed but not to great lengths.
  • Some sexual discussion at random times during the series
  • The fourth season includes themes of S&M. There is talk about a character who enjoys hot wax being poured on him. There is other similar discussions but nothing too graphic.
  • Tony Soprano runs several brothels. We see numerous scenes involving prostitutes and their customers. But nothing much is shown.

Violence & Gore

  • Some notably violent scenes include:
  • A man beats his pregnant girlfriend to death by punching her and bashing her head into a metal guard rail repeatedly.
  • A man is viciously beaten in the head with a golf club until his skull splits open and blood gushes out.
  • A man is shot in the face with a shotgun, and the camera lingers on his gory wound in closeup.
  • An elderly man shoots his godson in the head spraying blood and brain matter onto the ceiling.
  • A man is beaten to death with pool cues in a homophobic hate crime.
  • A man is shot in the back of the head and we see a bloody bullet hole in his face. A dead rat is shoved in his mouth.
  • A woman shoots her fiance in the chest and face the day before their wedding.
  • A corpse is dismembered in a bathtub. We see hands chopped off and a decapitation. Tons of blood.
  • One of the main characters is raped on a staircase.
  • There was a "curb stomp" scene that took place in a bar. One of the most brutal scenes of the series.
  • No one is safe from murder during this show. Throughout the series, family members and blood relatives kill each other in cold business like manners.


  • Constant, frequent use of "fuck" along with every other obscenity imaginable, including frequent abuse of "Jesus." Infrequent uses of c*nt scattered around the series.
  • The word fuck is used frequently throughout the series. These are mobsters so they tend to swear a lot. Each season features many uses of the F word, as is expected with the mob characters.
  • Slurs for African Americans, Italians, Polish, Hispanics, Jews, Indians, and homosexuals are heard through out the series.
  • The word cocksucker is used numerous times per episode.
  • Occasional profanity in other languages, especially Italian.
  • Virtually every single character on the show regularly uses harsh language.
  • Lots of graphic discussion of homosexual and heterosexual sex.
  • Irreverent jokes about sex, pedophilia, homosexuality, and suicide.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Use of drugs such as heroin and cocaine is shown often.
  • A main character abuses drugs and alcohol often.
  • Smoking and drinking are present in nearly every episode.
  • Tony's teenage son smokes marijuana.
  • Tony is involved in narcotics trafficking.
  • Underage drinking and drug use.
  • One character sells ecstasy to teens and adults alike at parties and local night clubs.
  • Teens take ecstasy and "Special K" at a party. One overdoses and goes to the hospital.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The show can be extremely suspenseful and intense. Major characters are killed, sometimes suddenly.
