Disclosing Amazonas in the Beginning of the Twentieth Century
21 October 2006 | by claudio_carvalhoSee all my reviews

The Portuguese Silvino Santos arrived in Manaus on the day he was fourteen years old (19 Nov 1889) moved by the spirit of adventure. He bought a camera, took pictures of Amazonas and returned to Portugal. When he was eighteen, he definitely emigrated to Brazil and the rubber baron Julio Cesar Arana, accused of slavery of Indians in his rubber trees plantation, hired Silvino Santos to shoot a movie for his defense in the court in England. However, all the negatives were lost when the vessel that was transporting them to Europe in 1914 was sunk by a German submarine. Later Silvino Santos prepared another film to promote the Amazonia region, but the negatives were stolen by a relative. In 1922, the successful entrepreneur Joaquim Gonçalves Araújo hired Silvino Santos to promote the business potential of Amazonas for an Exposition in Rio de Janeiro relative to the Centenary of the Independence of Brazil. Silvino Santos made "No País das Amazonas" and the movie was awarded with a golden medal.

My vote is seven.
