Plans for an adaptation of William Gibson's short story were made as far back as 1989, with Kathryn Bigelow originally attached to direct.
During the making of the film, Asia Argento made the documentary Abel/Asia (1998) about director Abel Ferrara.

In the DVD version, the first scene plays out as X watches the incident. The close ups/inserts only show him. However on the VHS, Fox is standing next to him in several shots. This isn't the only difference between the two. Many of the shots appear wider on the VHS copy. Such as towards the end when Fox and X get off the elevator during Fox's voiceover, only their legs and feet are visible. On the VHS, you can see all of them and also the men that were sent to kill them ducking off to the side of the elevators.
