Listen to this week’s YouTube Music Playlist here.

Halsey, “Without Me”

Sounds like: A textbook diss for a toxic ex

Perfect for: Establishing your romantic boundaries and your self-worth

Last year, with Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, Halsey gave us a script-flipping take on Romeo & Juliet — and she’s still all about tortured romance on her first solo single since then. “Put you right back on your feet/Just so you could take advantage of me,” she sings on this cool club-pop kiss-off to a toxic ex. In a statement, she said simply,

‘Beacon 23’ TV Series Adaptation From Zak Penn Nears Green Light At Spectrum

  • Deadline
Beacon 23, Hugh Howey’s bestselling sci-fi novel, is heading to the small screen. I hear the project, from writer Zak Penn, is getting a series order for a run on Charter Communications’ Spectrum cable systems. The series will be produced by independent studio Platform One Media and Spectrum Originals.

Set in the 23rd Century, a series of beacons help passing ships avoid disaster. The TV adaptation focuses on a man who thinks he will find peace manning one of these remote “lighthouses in space”, but he quickly discovers that he can’t outrun his past.

Beacon 23 would mark the second high-profile series order for Spectrum, joining the Bad Boys offshoot L.A.’s Finest starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba. This is part of Charter Communications’s strategy to introduce high-end original content on its Spectrum cable systems. The company’s original efforts are

Never Ending Sequels – It’s All About The Money

The very best movies are the ones that end leaving us wanting more. They give us characters we fall in love with, worlds we enjoy spending time in, and stories we never really want to end. Those are the tales that capture our hearts and our imaginations, and they’re big hits for the studios that make them. Unfortunately, because they’re big hits, the temptation to drag the story on far past the point where there’s nothing left to say kicks in.

It’s easy to understand that temptation. Everybody reading this probably wishes they had a magic money tree they could keep kicking and getting a payoff from. Writing, directing and performing in a successful film franchise is the equivalent of hitting online slots sites like RoseSlots.com and winning the jackpot from every game. But just like gambling, there’s a lot to be said for

‘Destination Wedding’ Review

Stars: Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Dj Dallenbach, Ted Dubost, Greg Lucey, D. Rosh Wright, Donna Lynn Jones, Curt Dubost, Michael Mogull | Written and Directed by Victor Levin

Destination Wedding reunites Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder, as the socially awkward Frank and Lindsay. When they meet on their way to a destination wedding, they soon discover they have a lot in common: they both hate the bride, the groom, the wedding, themselves, and most especially each other. As the weekend’s events continually force them together – and their cheerlessness immediately isolates them from the other guests – Frank and Lindsay find that if you verbally spar with someone long enough, anything can happen. When debate gives way to desire, they must decide which is stronger: their hearts or their common sense.

90′s sweethearts and icons of cinematic pop culture Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder team up for the first time since Francis Ford Coppola

‘Better Call Saul’ Season Finale Review: Antiheroes Embrace Their Destinies in TV’s Finest Moral Fable

‘Better Call Saul’ Season Finale Review: Antiheroes Embrace Their Destinies in TV’s Finest Moral Fable
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 4 Episode 10, “Winner.”]

Case Summary

While things seemed bleak for Jimmy McGill’s law career at the end of last week’s episode, “Winner” focuses on his last-ditch efforts to save his license — this time, leaning heavily into the role of still-grieving brother. While things between him and Kim remain cool, she is by his side, coaching him through his graveside mourning and the reception to honor the Charles McGill Reading Room that costs Jimmy $23,000, but puts on a great show for the local law community.

The show continues into the board hearing, where he comes prepared with the letter Chuck left to him in his will — but instead of reading the letter to the board, he uses it to pivot into an epic speech about how “I’ll never be as moral or smart or respected or as good as Chuck, but I can try.” Kim

Aquaman Extended Trailer Delivers 5 Minutes of Intense DC Action
The extended trailer for James Wan's Aquaman has been released and it's our best look yet into the standalone Arthur Curry film that DC fans have been waiting for. Original planning from the studio had the movie hitting theaters this past summer, and then pushed back to this fall, but it will now come out at the end of December. Aquaman has been teased in the past, most notably from the San Diego Comic-Con first trailer, but that footage is nothing compared to what the studio has gifted us today in honor of New York Comic-Con.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Hits: Looking Back at the 2000s Wuxia Boom

Craig Lines Oct 7, 2018

In the 2000s, a run of martial arts hits that started with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon changed cinema for good.

Wuxia, in one form or another, has been around for nearly two millennia. The word itself – coined in the early 20th century – simplistically translates to “Martial Heroes” and Wuxia stories tell epic adventures, full of martial arts, romantic tragedy, high fantasy and eastern philosophy. Through books, poems and comics, Wuxia perpetuated through the centuries so it’s unsurprising that it made the leap into film as soon as it had an opportunity. Some of the earliest examples of Chinese cinema are Wuxia films and, to give you an idea of how epic I mean when I say epic, the (sadly now-lost) Burning of the Red Lotus Temple (1928) clocked in at roughly 27 hours long…

As a cinematic force, Wuxia exploded in the 1960s, thanks largely to a trio

TV Review – Maniac

Liam Hoofe reviews Netflix’s Maniac

2018 has been a bit of a hit and miss year for Netflix originals, but the streaming services has really upped its game in recent weeks with the return of some of their most popular shows including BoJack Horseman and American Vandal. Their most anticipated release this month, though, comes from True Detective director Cary Fukunaga whose new show, Maniac, dropped on the service this past Friday.

Set in a not-too-distant future New York, Maniac exists in a world where living costs take up 87% of your income, people can prolong their lives in pods in their back garden, and proxy friend and husband services dominate the advertising world. It’s a living, breathing New York City, but far from the one that we know and love today.

The opening episode introduces us to the show’s two main characters – Owen and Annie. The former, played by Jonah Hill,

Charlie's Angels Reboot Begins Shooting, Elizabeth Banks Shares First Photo
The Charlie's Angels reboot has officially started filming. Sony has been putting together a new big screen take on the classic female-led action series for a while now and all of the pieces have finally been moved into place. Elizabeth Banks, who previously helmed Pitch Perfect 2, announced that production has gotten underway. Here's what Banks had to say in a Twitter post, which included a photo of the clapboard.

"Continuing the legacy of telling the story of three incredible women working together. #womeninfilm #CharliesAngels #DayOne #2019 #femalefilmmaker."

The clapper revels that Bill Pope has been tapped as the movie's director of photography, which is a credit to the project. Pope has previously worked as a cinematographer on movies like The Matrix, Spider-Man 2 and Disney's live-action The Jungle Book. Not a bad guy to have working on your movie. The three women Elizabeth Banks refers to are former Twilight Star Kristen Stewart,

Bastions of Love: A Conversation with Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel

  • MUBI
“Every poem against the police is also and always a guardian of love for the world.”—Anne BoyerIn the first images of Jessica Forever we find the titular eternal hero on a rooftop under a tender pink sunrise, briefly followed by a startling shot of a young man jumping through a glass door. This swing in tonalities offers a most apt distillation to this special movie's many moods, textures, and the pulse of its constructed world. Yet this world may prove not be a construct in the least—Jessica, realized with calming warmth and secrecy by Aomi Muyock (Love), has taken it upon herself to rescue and rehabilitate "Orphans"—young men who have done horrible things, in many cases beyond their control. Jessica's methods? She showers them with measured yet rapturous platonic love. The Orphans are in turn hunted by the government ("Special Forces"), whom appear solely in a mass

Roache-Turner brothers’ ‘Nekrotronic’ divides the critics in Toronto

‘Nekrotronic.’

Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner’s sci-fi horror-comedy Nekrotronic seems to have nearly as many detractors as ardent admirers judging by the reviews after the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The pro-camp lauded the film, one of 10 titles which screened in the Midnight Madness section, as insane fun with fantastical story elements and tongue-in-cheek humour. The naysayers derided the plot as over-the-top, silly and formulaic.

Produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features and Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerrilla Films, the film stars Monica Bellucci as Finnegan, CEO of the sinister Daemokon corporation, who is determined to feast on every human soul on the planet via a new smartphone app.

Ben O’Toole and Epine Bob Savea play waste disposal workers who find themselves caught up in the conflict between Finnegan and a trio of Nekromancers: Luther (David Wenham) and his daughters Molly (Caroline Ford) and

Jessica Jones: 20 Weirdest Things About Kilgrave’s Body

One of the most impressive thing about Netflix's Jessica Jones is its casting. Not only does Krysten Ritter absolutely nail it as the titular character, but she's backed up by Mike Colter, Rachael Taylor, and Eka Darville. Then you have heavy-hitters such as Carrie-Anne Moss from The Matrix adding in a level of remarkable pathos as well as the legendary David Tennant playing one of the best baddies out there.

That baddie would be Zebediah Kilgrave, otherwise known as "Killgrave, "The Purple Man", and "Kevin Thompson" in Jessica Jones; a villain with such remarkably powerful gifts that he doesn't need to raise a fist to anyone in order to get what he wants.

Some villains just don't need to use brute force to accomplish their goals. They use their intellect matched with their ability to manipulate. In Kilgrave's case, his manipulation skill is actually a superhuman ability that's pretty
