A boy considers talking to an unpopular boy, and his friend warns him he can "kiss his chances of losing his virginity goodbye if he talks to him."

A man slaps and hits a boy; the boy's mouth gets bruised. A scuffle. A man cuts his eye in a mining accident; another dies in the mine (we see a sheet-covered body carried out of the mine on a stretcher). We see a man with a bandage on his head (his skull was apparently fractured in a coal-mining accident).

Although rated PG, there's still a fair amount of language throughout.

A couple anatomical and scatological references, lots of mild profanities and many insults

John Hickum refers to Roy Lee's dad as a drunk; and implies that he is when he stops Roy Lee's dad from hitting Roy Lee.

The boys go to a bootlegger to get refined alcohol. They mention not being able to use the watered down liquor at the company store. Some may infer that the boys sampled the alcohol, but that is not seen on screen.

John Hickum is a strict, authoritarian father figure who swears in literally every scene he's in.
