Storyline

"Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years" begins two years after the end of "Lonesome Dove". After two years spent bounty hunting, womanizing, and drinking away the painful memories of his late wife, Hannah, Newt Call returns to town to find many things have changed. His brother-in-law, Austin, is now an alcoholic sheriff, who has never fully recovered from his beloved sister's death, and blames Call for it. His father-in-law, Josiah, is the town mayor, but hasn't been right in the head since Hannah died. The town is run under the iron fist of Clayton Mosby, who also cannot forget Hannah, who looked amazingly like his late wife, Mary. "The Lonesome Dove", the hotel opened in the mini-series by Ida Grayson, now belongs to Amanda Carpenter, a woman with a mysterious past and a determination on par with Clay Mosby's. Curtis Wells also gets a new gunsmith, a mysterious and feisty woman named Mattie Shaw. Written by liessi@hotmail.com

Trivia

Bret Hart stated in his autobiography that a third season of Lonesome Dove had been planned, where his character Luther Root was to be appointed sheriff of Curtis Wells. However, the series was cancelled during the season break, without a chance to properly resolve the storylines. See more »

Alternate Versions

Despite the series being a Canadian production, the episode "Partners" has never been televised in Canada either in its original run or in syndication. This is due to fairly explicit psycho-sexual overtones involving a teenage couple. However, the episode has been shown in the USA. See more »

deserved better
2 February 2006 | by mdurkin93See all my reviews

this show deserved a 5 year run. It almost has a NYPD BLUE feel to it for grittiness and the way some of it is shot. A good honest feeling western, it truly picks up where the mini series left. Bairstow seems to have studied the characters from each mini series created and eloquently brought his own version to the screen. He himself is good actor if given the right role in the right show. Watching him in other shows and movies, he knows how play dark characters. If the show had progressed i think some of the episodes written later in outlaw years would have become more consistent, i think it would have also ended more coherently. Still, Any lonesome dove is worth owning
