Atmosphere above all

Author Herman Bang acclaimed for his scarce precise dialogue filled with tension and withheld emotions has never been transferred better into film than with this moody presentation of more than fifty people coming together in a bankruptcy ridden summer resort hotel. The impressionistic style from the novel is recaptured with success by Svend Methling Sr. and a group of excellent performers are casted beautifully in the different parts bringing this epic of Robert Altman-like complexity into motion. The direction is precise and to the point and never before has a collective actors effort on this scale come out as effective as in this production. Going back in time you experience a society with strict rules and regulations where people have to maneuver with extreme difficulty to survive as vulnerable human beings. From his own homosexual existence Herman Bang knew social restrictions on people very well, and bringing his low key dramas on to film is an accomplishment of never surpassed magnitude.
