Sex & Nudity

  • Homer and Candy dive head-first into a sexual relationship after Candy's boyfriend goes off to war.
  • They are shown having sex on a couple of occasions (once fully clothed in the woods, another time naked indoors).
  • A lingering shot of Candy lying naked on a bed is especially disconcerting.
  • A male migrant worker is shown fully nude (genital exposure) after taking a shower.
  • Nothing is depicted onscreen, but Mr. Rose's habit of having sex with his daughter, Rose, is central to the plot in the second half of the film.
  • A man and woman have sex on a beach. They kiss passionately and moan loudly while the man thrusts on top of her. They are both fully clothed.
  • (appears suddenly somewhat distant) A man walks out of a shower naked; his bare buttocks and, briefly, his genitals are visible.
  • (Appears very suddenly and full screen closeup) A woman lies on a bed completely nude... Her nude back, buttocks and legs are visible, and her breast is briefly seen.
  • Much of the film is based around abortions and children given up to an orphanage after birth there

Violence & Gore

  • Two men briefly fight with knives. One man's hand it cut and another has his jacket sliced.
  • We see a man covered in blood and he tells another man how he was stabbed. He then took his own knife and stabbed himself several more times. He later dies.
  • A girl is found very ill. We later learn that someone tried to perform an abortion on her with a crochet hook and hear a graphic description of her wounds. She later dies.
  • Several scenes show women having abortions.

Profanity

  • Some mild profanity (hell, damn, etc.)

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The doctor ( Michael Caine ) is seen huffing ether and getting high.
  • Various characters smoke in several scenes and casually drink.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Some scenes are emotionally intense. The topics of abortion, substance abuse and incest may be distressing to some.
