Trivia

Jonathan identifies the plague of boils as the final plague. Biblically, the final plague was the death of the firstborn sons, which never happens in the movie. Given that the death of the firstborn is controversial even within some parts of the Christian Church, it was probably cut for not being family friendly. See more »

Goofs

When Beni is looking for the black book in the office, he gets caught by O'Connell. When they are standing under the fan, you hear the scream of the Egyptologist. They all look toward the camera but when Beni runs out the window behind them, the Egyptologist is there. See more »

Quotes

[first lines]
Ardeth Bay: [narrating] Thebes, City of the Living, crown jewel of Pharaoh Seti the First. Home of Imhotep, Pharaoh's high priest, keeper of the dead. Birthplace of Anck Su Namun, Pharaoh's mistress. No other man was allowed to touch her. But for their love, they were willing to risk life itself.

Crazy Credits

At the end credits of the film, the main cast and crews' names are first presented in hieroglyphics, then change into Roman(English) fonts that have a hieroglyphic-like look to them (the rest of the credits are also in this font). After the main cast and crew is named, the rest of the credits, instead of scrolling down in traditional straight lines, are staggered in snake-like patterns, while hieroglyphics are placed in various areas of the credits and on the screen. Alternate Versions

The DVD and LD feature some deleted scenes:
  • The first deleted scene takes place when the group is riding to Hamunaptra. Johnathan and the Warden argue about his snoring. Then the groups finds a mass of skeletons partially buried in the sand. Ardeth thinks that the skeletons are other treasure-seekers who failed. To one corpse Rick says, "I knew that guy."
  • The next scene shows the ferry just before it leaves Cairo. Beni is seen on board (revealing his participation in the quest earlier than the final film) telling the members of the rival expedition how long it will take to get to Hamunaptra.
  • Finally, there an extended version of the scene where Rick and Jonathan find the Book of Gold. More of Imhotep's followers burst through the floor and attack, throwing them away before trying to open the Statue of Horus, presumably to steal the book. But this statue has also been booby trapped and salt acid melts the mummies. This scene explains why holes suddenly appear in the floor in the theatrical cut.

Great Adventurous Fun!
23 July 2000 | by BaronBl00dSee all my reviews

Certainly this Universal remake is more in the vain of Indiana Jones rather than the original Mummy. It is high on adventure and comedy, and wins because of it. The sets, scenery, special effects are all first-rate. The film is fast-paced from beginning to end and is very suspenseful. Stephen Sommers again shows his talent as a director for creating action-packed adventure with a high level of comedic overtones. The cast are all very good in their roles, yet none of them seem really to be taking themselves or the film too serious. Brendan Fraser is an affable hero, and Rachel Weisz makes a good heroine. Good support comes from John Hannah, Kevin J. O'Connor, and the mummy, Arnold Vosloo. Also a real treat was seeing Bernard Fox in a small role as an aging British pilot. Don't expect the old mummy of lore in this one, but sit down and have one heck of a ride...a rollercoaster of hijinks in the sands of Egypt.
