Val Kilmer: examining his recent straight-to-dvd movies

Kirsten Howard Sep 13, 2016

We examine the recent Val Kilmer movies, that happened to have bypasses cinemas...

Once upon a time, Val Kilmer’s individual look - defined by a little Swedish blood from his mother’s side - had hearts pumping. Those looks, along with his arrogant, edgy attitude and acting style, helped him clinch plenty of complimentary roles during the 80s and early-90s. Films like Top Secret, Top Gun, Willow and my personal favourite Real Genius were pushing him toward a stellar career back then, and his star was steadily rising.

See also: a closer look at what may be Val Kilmer's weirdest film

But Kilmer came down from a serious high of Heat and Tombstone in the mid-90s when he signed on to the notorious clusterfuck that was The Island Of Dr. Moreau, and only recently has the part he played in its disastrous production come to light.

Team Experience is at the Tribeca Film Festival. Here's Jason on Detour.

You know what will make me feel like it's the late 1990s again real quick? (If you answered "There's a Clinton in the White House" you're a little ahead of yourself, but just by a few months.) What will make me feel like it's the late 1990s again real quick is watching a movie about verbose criminals getting themselves into hyper-violent timeline-warping shenanigans - Things To Do In Denver When You're 8 Heads In A Duffel Bag; that ol' Pulp Fiction addiction.

Do you guys remember that time Oliver Stone tried to out-Tarantino Tarantino (even though Tarantino was always really trying to out-Stone Stone) and made U Turn? That's the Tarantino-ish that Detour reminded me the most of. And U Turn's not a bad thing to be reminded of! U Turn is nuts, in a never not entertaining way!

Trailer: Pawan Kumar Follows Up Lucia By Making A U Turn

Indian filmmaker Pawan Kumar made a name for himself back in 2013 when he made the nation's first crowdfunded feature. That film, the Kannada language Lucia, was a trippy thriller about an insomniac who turns to a mysterious street drug to combat his condition with unpredictable results. It made the rounds at international festivals, along with spawning a remake in Tamil and a deal for a remake in Hindi, before Kumar got back on the hunt to make his next feature. After a false start with a film he'd written titled C10H14N2, Kumar has now completed U Turn, another thriller, this one centered around a female protagonist played by Shraddha Srinath. While the plot synopsis doesn't give any details apart from the label of "mystery thriller",...

Clint Eastwood’s Navy Seal biopic, which earned six Oscars nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor, was mostly on target with critics

American Sniper” earned six Academy Awards nominations on Thursday morning, including for Best Picture and a Best Actor nod for Bradley Cooper, who beefed himself up to play real life Navy Seal Chris Kyle — the U.S. military’s all-time leader in confirmed kills — and turned in a commanding performance by most accounts.

The nominations committee submitted in their votes well before “American Sniper’s” wide release on Friday, but would the critics offer up as much praise?

Interview: John Ridley on Oscars and Jimi Hendrix pic 'All Is By My Side'
In the same week -- really, the same 24 hours -- he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for "12 Years a Slave," John Ridley flew to Austin to launch into work on the pilot for ABC's "American Crime." That meant, too, he could promote "Jimi: All Is Lost," to which he referred as his "child," his baby, a film fit for the South By Southwest film conference and is creeping toward theatrical release on May. "All Is By My Side" and "12 Years a Slave" both made their debut at the Toronto International Film Festival last year; but it's the former that he wrote, directed and executive produced. Touching on one year of rocker Jimi Hendrix's early career, Ridley also had to work-around the notoriously difficult Hendrix estate, which denied the film any usage of Hendrix's recorded work, and long timeline conversations with people producing the film. I thought that
