When their abusive parents are killed in a car crash, twin sisters Rosie and Violet vow to run away to Kentucky in search of a better life. While on the road, the girls meet up with Pete, a drifter working as a grounds keeper on a derelict army base, who takes them in. While Violet falls for him, Rosie becomes increasingly angry and hostile, and the sisters' childhood bond is eventually destroyed forever.

After filming "Ripe," then sixteen-year-old unknown Monica Keena got her big break as the star in Disney's live-action "Snow White: A Tale of Terror." But it was her portrayal of the budding nymphet Violet, in her first starring role, that she really got Disney concerned. Not wanting to see their new ingenue deflowered before the release of "Snow White," they showed interest in buying the independent picture. "Ripe" producers suspected that the studio wanted it only to bury it, because it ran contrary to their typical fare. Disney refused to comment on their reasons at the time. See more
