Not exactly great, but good enough.
bannonanthony8 June 2007
As a fan of car chase films, as soon as I heard about this one I had to see it. I was annoyed that when I tried to watch the trailer on the internet that it wouldn't play, which meant I couldn't get a taster of it. But now I finally own the film on DVD and I have to say that I'm glad I do as RED LINE, while not exactly a great car chase film, is enjoyable enough.

I think it's unfair to try and compare Chad McQueen to his father. I mean, we might as well face it. Chad will never be as good as his father Steve. But I think he should be judged for his own qualities. In this film he is very good in the action hero role, and handles the stunt driving excellently. One problem I had with the car chases was that at times it seems the cars aren't going very fast at all. But they are still exciting. It was a bit cheeky how they have Chad drive a green Mustang like the one his dad drove in BULLITT at one point, but the cars on display are all beauties, especially the contraband-carrying Corvette that the main body of the plot revolves around.

Roxana Zal is quite good as leading lady Gem and Jan-Michael Vincent is very menacing as main bad guy Keller. Strangely though, MIchael Madsen who is given very high billing in the credits is barely involved in the movie, but is still very good. It's a shame Dom DeLuise and Corey Feldman didn't have more to do. I love the way that Chad manages to stitch up both sets of bad guys looking for the Corvette's cargo in the end.

In short, RED LINE is a good enough way to spend an hour and a half in my opinion.

Countless car chases and bad acting combine in this C-grade action flick.
mike_cable1 June 2010
Classic action man Steve McQueen was well known for his love of cars and racing and this inspiration shines through as his son, Chad McQueen, follows in his footsteps, putting together an ambitious film full of car chases, sleazy dialog and some naughty content.

The other notable names involved are a curious list: Jan Michael Vincent from Airwolf, Dom DeLuise from Cannonball Run, Eighties child star Corey Feldman and Reservoir Dogs heavy Michael Madsen. The other stars are of course the numerous makes and models of cars used in the car chases: Porsche 911 and 928, Jaguar XK, Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette, two Ford Mustangs and more.

The story follows a reckless thief who robs shops and steals cars for a living but works by day as a mechanic. When he becomes mixed up with a heavy who blackmails him to steal cars for him, he discovers a way to turn it around and make a fortune in the process. Of all the scenes, the most memorable is when Chad's character spots a green Mustang and goes on to pay homage to his father's chase scene in his classic film Bullit.

In some of the scenes it is easy to think they didn't have any planning or arrangement with traffic management or the public during the filming of their chase scenes. The dialog is written and delivered with poor timing by all actors and excessive use of the same engine sound effects during car chase scenes can be distracting, otherwise it's a must-see for car enthusiasts and fans of bad films.

I give it 1 extra point for ambition.

Another Low-budget Car Chase Film.
jeffreytwagner30 January 2009
You have to like it for what it is. It is a cheep car movie with Corey Feldman and Jan Michael Vincent in it. It doesn't matter what else happens. That is what defines this one. With that said. It was fun. I enjoy the low budget car films. This has the car chases, a little t-n-a and a few big names and an odd cameo. First the cars and chases. You have a Corvette, a few Porshes, a Ferrari, a Jaguar and a few Mustanges. Chad McQueen, Steve McQueen's son, at one point drives a green 1968 Mustang Fastback I guess as a tribute to Bullett in which his father stared. The chases are good, not great. You can tell that one car is attached to a camera truck during one of the chases. The story is about what you would expect. Not going to elaborate. The stars. Well Chad McQueen is not his dad but is well suited for the lead in a low budget car film. Corey Feldman is ...well... Corey Feldman. Michael Madsen plays a guy like Michael Madsen would play. Jan Michael Vincent, I think had a motorcycle accident before this movie was made and his face looks like it went through a meet grinder. But he fits the over all theme of this movie. LOW BUDGET. Dom Delouis plays the worst role I think he has ever played. And if you watch close Ron Jeremy pops up twice in the film. Don't get me wrong. If you like cheesy low-budget car films, this will hit the spot. If you are looking for Bullett. Not it.

Entertaining,but forgettable

A B-grade action movie with some well-known actors in it.

Look out for Jan-Michael Vincent as one of the bad guys. Notice anything peculiar about him ? Well, the truth is, Jan-Michael, as we all know, struggled with some drinking problems in real life, got smashed up in an vehicle accident a day or two prior to shooting this movie, but still showed up at the set - to everyone's surprise ! His face was still badly swollen and if you look carefully you will notice the hospital band on his wrist ! This actor quite literally got up from the hospital bed and went straight to the set - Amazing ! Anyway, Jan has been through some pretty rough times and we salute his courage to still honor his commitments in this entertaining, but forgettable "Friday-night video" type movie.

So bad you won't want to miss it
taterman22 January 2003
Lots of cars get wrecked in this movie which is only fitting, as this is a car wreck of a movie. You know you shouldn't stare, but you go ahead and do it anyway. If you hang in there and keep watching, you'll be treated to classic scenes such as a car chase in which identical film clips keep looping to give the impression that the chase stretches over an extended period. A lead actress so bad she would be hooted off the stage of a high school production. And former "big name" actors who have some explaining to do if they ever want to be taken seriously again.

AHHAHAHAHAHA!!!
jackootz28 September 2003
Warning: Spoilers
This was meant to be a comedy, right? It couldn't have been a serious try at an action/drama flick! I had more laughs watching this mess than any Jim Carrey movies! I loved watching McQueen get all confused trying to figure out the shift pattern on that 'Bullitt' ripoff Mustang. How about when he popped the clutch in reverse & then couldn't find first gear! Ahahaha! Or the high performance Corvette that couldn't outrun the 195 horsepower Police cars. Then there's the obligatory Bullitt chase sequence ripoff where all the cross traffic is 'mysteriously' moving faster than the chase vehicles.(I'm not sure I can spoil anything about this thing but I guess this could be a spoiler):I like the Reservoir Dog ripoff scene. Is that how they fooled Madsen into getting involved in this thing? The only drama I found was looking at Vincents face.I kept wondering how hammered he must have been to check himself out of a hospital after a near fatal crash just to act in such a fatal wreck of a movie. Actually, I think I might be too harsh. It really served some good unintentional humor! Sort of like watching The A-Team.

Just plain awful
sjlmickit22 February 2000
This movie is hideously bad. You can't blame the cast, especially Michael Madsen, but what are they doing in this junk? Even Corey Feldman and Robert D'Zar are completely wasted. Jan-Michael Vincent looks as though he has been in a serious accident--his face is full of scars and his speech is somewhat warbled. I won't even comment on Dom Deluise.

The real problems are the direction and writing, both done by the same no-name. The dialogue is so inept it is laughable. Another problem is the stuntwork, or lack thereof. Most of the stunts consist of cars spinning around on grass or dirt or pavement, cars quickly accelerating/decelerating, or even cars driving off ledges (wow!!) There aren't even any explosions or gunplay.

Do yourself a favor--avoid this movie.

Red Line stalls out
tarbosh220004 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Jimmy (McQueen) is an auto mechanic and part-time stick-up man who uses the cars people drop off to speed away in after he finishes his petty heists. Despite the disapproval of his boss, Jerry (DeLuise), Jimmy ends up working for crime boss Keller (Vincent) as a driver.

While doing this, a series of events occurs: He discovers the truth about Tony (Feldman) and Crystal (Strain) - the brother and wife respectively of rival crime boss Mr. Lawrence (Madsen), and he also gains possession of a special Corvette with a surprise inside. Even though Gene (Z'Dar), one of Keller's goons, is on his trail, Jimmy manages to go on the run with Gem (Zal), who is escaping the clutches of her abusive boyfriend Dick (Zito). Is any of this making sense? Or, when it comes to seeing this movie, will you be drawing a RED LINE in the sand?

The Lone Tiger effect, as we call it, seems to be something we can never escape. Any time we see a cast list of this many B-Movie faces, it draws us in and proves impossible to resist. Yet again, sadly, we were disappointed. Despite the star power involved, Red Line just isn't that...well...involving.

One of the bright spots was the brief appearance of Dom DeLuise, who is just too talented to be hemmed in by a dire production like this. The supposed hero, Jimmy, is an unlikable criminal and he's the guy we're supposed to be rooting for? Evidently Chad McQueen thought so, as not only was he the star, he's also credited with stunt driving, casting, and producing. He was really involved with this project, and while, on the whole, it's probably a better movie than Money to Burn (1996) - produced by and starring a lot of the same people - it's not as funny as MTB. But it's about as dumb, so that equation doesn't really work out well in the viewer's favor. Most of Chad's shirts have sleeves this time around, so it looks like our Chad is finally growing up.

Jan-Michael Vincent's grotesque appearance - apparently the result of a real-life car accident - only helps his character, but it's all pretty unpleasant. Chuck Zito's line readings are pure gold, and the presences of Robert Z'Dar and Julie Strain are always welcome. Even Joe Estevez and none other than Ron Jeremy have cameos. Corey Feldman wears a silly jacket and holds his gun sideways. Roxana Zal plays the inexplicably pretty car wash girl. What drew all these people to be in this substandard movie? Maybe director Sjogren has a lot of charisma. Frankly, we're surprised Ian Jacklin isn't involved.

Ron Jeremy plays a gardener whose name is Gardner. So, that's the level of intelligence on display here...but did you expect anything else going in? We, as viewers, have to wait a whopping 63 minutes until we get to Michael Madsen to be in the mix of this broth. But really, there are no surprises on show with Red Line. It's a very long 90 minutes. It's similar to Sjogren's Strip N' Run (2000), also starring Madsen.

There should have been scenes of Chad McQueen beating up the many goons the crime bosses send after him, or some such action setpieces. But aside from some driving stuff and a few mild blow-ups, the action factor is low. Just imagine No Man's Land (1987) but with no Charlie Sheen, nothing really interesting happens, and there are boom mike shadows on the walls. This could have been a really easy fix: make the hero likable and give him goons to fight. Boom. Better movie. But no, sadly, Red Line opts for the stupider road less traveled (that's less-traveled for a reason).

In the end, despite the stellar cast, Red Line stalls out.

My favourite B Movie
keyope9 September 2016
Red Line is a cult classic in my house. Me and a buddy of mine have watched it about a hundred times. More recently I've uploaded it to iMovie and edited it down to a 45 minute version with a Rolling Stones soundtrack that works perfectly with it. Thing is, this is not a masterpiece but 50% of it is really good fun. It has a wonderful cast who look like they're having a great time. The dialogue is hilarious in some places, not necessarily intentional every time, but a lot of it comes across as very natural or possibly ad-libbed. Either way, much like Star Wars (which is renowned for bad dialogue) it's endlessly quotable. A few of my favourites include -

"Kill us and the deal's off"

"I got a name for ya Larry, Squidlips"

"No, no not the fag!"

"DD, VD, DD what the feck is a DD?"

"You ask a lotta questions, are you a fekkin cop?"

On top of all that you have Jan Michael Vincent who had been in a serious road accident just before filming. His face is a mess and looks horribly painful, but that doesn't stop Michael Madsen from making jokes about it in a scene with Chad McQueen. The soundtrack is terrible and makes some of the car chase scenes seem boring, when in fact they are actually well done. Add in a bit of the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack (as I did) to accompany the chases and suddenly they're great fun. Anyway if you get a chance to see this, it has a lot to recommend. Like I said half of it is great, the other half just shows up how low budget it is. But I love this film all the same.

This Movie Burns Rubber!
Hawke-223 September 1998
This movie is excellent for Race Car drivers and fans of Nascar, because this movie looks just like my video game, Top Gear Rally on the Nintendo 64 system. This movie has a great deal of good action, stunts, plot, exceptionally good acting, and stars from the past. Chad McQueen did an excellent job as an actor and a stunt car driver in this film, on how he set up two different organized crimes, and they killed each other while he ran off with a ton of smack. Jan-Michael Vincent did an excellent job too, even though his age is really starting to show in this film, but he did have a motorcycle accident the day before they started filming, at times in the film, you can actually see his hospital band believe it or not! Jan-Michael Vincent, dominated this film, just like all his others! Since now that his age is really kicking in, he makes a perfect bad guy or a psycho path (Hidden Obsession). I recommend this film to all Hollywood B-movie fans!

RED LINE a slow, uneventful ride.
blackxmas11 March 2001
RED LINE is a bore. A sloppy, unfunny mess of an action film with an inviting box and a well-cut trailer. The acting is bad, the camera work is bad, the stunts are bad. Everything about this film, really, is bad. Decent exploitation cast is wasted. Jan Michael Vincent is interesting to watch because his face is a mangled mess thanks to his unfortunate car accident. This is another of those productions that could've been a lot of fun with a competent director concentrating on making the car chase scenes exciting, rather than a hack job to flood a market overflowing with lackluster action pictures.Yawn.

Crummy Movie,Great Corvette ZR1scenes!
CorvetteArchivesDotCom25 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this on broadcast TV Late Movie and was both disappointed and excited. I saw the description as having Chad McQueen and wished to really just see if he looked like his dad. The writing and editing was at best abysmal! The car chases were the best part except for some editing...a first year film student could have done better!! Spoiler data 2 follow so stop now if you care....... First the ZR-1 scenes were VERY cool...jumps and stuff and at the end they smash it into a brick wall!!!!! WAY COOL! At one point Chad must steal a car to get away from the bad guy...any guesses which car?....his dad's Mustang Bullit car of course! The cinematography is at times archaic and unique at others but is overdone. In one scene as they race through a cemetery skirting death the camera does a 360 degree shot that is very unique but they do it several times and you actually get dizzy! They apparently didn't have $ to do long chase scenes so they used a couple cameras then used the different shots. The only problem was it was WAY obvious and were used minutes later in obviously the SAME unique location. It actually looked worse than "Airwolf" ...same shot of Chad shifting...mob guy close up..same shot Chad shifting...ad infinitum! One scenes editing was laughable they used the EXACT SAME SEQUENCE TWICE....they went around a curve and a Ford model "A or T" was coming toward them and it even "ahhhh-oooo-ga"ed....Not once...but TWICE! They didn't even edit the sound!!!

Being a Corvette nut I searched many stores at the mall today...but there are SO many films with the name RED LINE spelled different ways I just decided to find it here....BTW, oddly a 1997 sci-fi flick of the same name ALSO has a C4 Vette on the cover.

If you like Vettes, or thought Stalone in Cobra was a comedy....you gotta see this movie!!
