“Banjo is a breakthrough performance for the underrated Riteish Deshmukh” – Subhash K Jha Review

Starring Riteish Deshmukh, Nargis Fakhri

Directed by Ravi Jadhav

In what could be seen as a breakthrough performance for the underrated Riteish Deshmukh with reservations, Banjo provides him a chance to play a street musician in the bustling egalitarian bylanes of Mumbai where water scarcity is seriously countermanded by an abundance of dreams.

In fact one of the dreamers dreams of owning his personal water tank.

Seriously.

Deshmukh plays Taraat, who we are told, has been raised by a now-old and senile musician (JanardhanParab).Early in the film when in typical Raja Hindustani style Taraat is supremely smitten by the GoriMemsahib from the Us (Fakhri), he goes through a lengthy drunken monologue where he pretends to hold a conversation with his inert foster-father who can’t hear a thing. Deshmukh exercises admirable control over the dialogues and the shifting emotions in the sequence, never overstating the self-pity for applause.

Ranbir Kapoor -Deepika Padukones kissing scene censored from Tamasha

Ranbir Kapoor -Deepika Padukones kissing scene censored from Tamasha
Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha has been certified with a 'UA' censor certificate, and with 5 cuts. One of these cuts is a long lingering sensual kiss between Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The torrid smooch has been reduced by almost 90 percent. Says a source, "The censor board found the kiss too hot to handle. Apparently it is the most lengthy and sensuous kiss ever on screen, even longer and more passionate than the one between Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani." Also edited are three verbal cuts, including the word 'pole' which was seen to be too phallic and the term 'apna haath jagannath' which is often a term for self-pleasuring. These have been removed. That apart the film has been left intact by the censor board. Says a source, "The board members loved the film. The chemistry between Ranbir and Deepika crackles...sometimes too much, especially in the kissing.

Wait a minute… Yes, you read it right: Bollywood’s first commercial homosexual love story.

Produced by Balaji and directed by Danish Aslam, Romil and Juggal is based on Shakespeare’s famous Romeo and Juliet, with a male lead couple.

Danish Aslam recently stated that just because Romil and Juggal is a homosexual love story, this does not make things different – “To me, Romil & Juggal is just like any love story. It doesn’t matter if the lovers are both men.

Tiff Special Review: The Lunchbox (dir. Ritesh Batra, 2013)

  • Bollyspice
“The 5,000 or so dabbawalas in the city have an astounding service record. Every working day they transport more than 130,000 lunch boxes throughout Mumbai, the world’s fourth-most-populous city. That entails conducting upwards of 260,000 transactions in six hours each day, six days a week, 52 weeks a year (minus holidays), but mistakes are extremely rare.”

- Stefan Thomke, Harvard Business Review, Nov. 1, 2012

It’s one of those “extremely rare” mistakes that Stefan Thomke writes about that results in the dabba (lunchbox) that Ila (Nimrat Kaur) has prepared for her husband landing on the desk of Saajan (Irrfan Khan). Ila is a housewife whose busy husband ignores her, prompting her to take the advice of the upstairs Auntie to spice up their relationship by spicing up the food she puts in his dabba; Saajan is a widowed, middle-aged government claims adjuster whose weariness and sadness envelop him. When Ila realizes that the special

From my first tooth to my first bruise, my first day at school to my first belly flop into the pool, they are all there. Some are protected by a forgetful mind but they are there. They make the identity we create in life. For example, a part of my identity is Bollyspice. Like all the writers here at Bollyspice. How does this link to the title?
