Jenifer Lewis Has Thoughts on Auditions: "Are You Out of Your F—ing Mind?"

Jenifer Lewis' IMDb page reads like the greatest hits of popular culture from the last three decades.

And those are just her TV credits. She also starred in What's Love Got to Do With It, The Preacher's Wife and The Princess and the Frog — again, usually tackling maternal roles. So the title of her new memoir, The Mother of Black Hollywood, came quite naturally.

"I'm not gonna tear her down," Bassett insists, getting candid with ETonline in a new interview to promote her directorial debut focusing on the life of the late pop-music legend.

In Whitney, premiering Jan. 17 on Lifetime, the actress-turned-director gives the public a peek into the singer's trials and tribulations behind the mic -- but don't go misreading her intentions, she says. Bassett went as far as cutting scenes from the film to avoid tarnishing Houston's legacy.

"There were certain things in the script, and it was like, 'No, we're not gonna show that!'" the director says. "With the song with Babyface ("I'm Your Baby Tonight"), the way it was written (in the script was) she picks up a cigarette and can't concentrate on finishing the song because she's thinking about what's not going right with Bobby

Penny Marshall Returns to Directing with Baseball Biopic
Penny Marshall is set to return to the director's chair for the first time since 2001's Riding in Cars With Boys with a biopic that follows the life of baseball pioneer Effa Manley, who became the first woman ever to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Effa Manley rose through the ranks of the Negro Leagues in the 1930s and 1940s as the co-owner and business manager of the Newark Eagles, which went on to win the Negro World Series in 1946. She became the sole owner of the team after her husband and co-owner Abe Manley died in 1948.

Penny Marshall is obviously no stranger to baseball movies, directing the 1992 classic A League of Their Own, which followed the struggle to establish the first women's professional baseball league during World War II. Penny Marshall will also serve as executive producer of Effa, alongside screenwriter Byron Motley. Here's what the

Box Office: Why '2 Guns' and 'Smurfs 2' Are Both Winners -- and Losers

This was a tricky weekend to determine who the winners and losers at the box office really were.

On the one hand, there was "2 Guns," which did better than its studio predicted but not as well as box office experts predicted, yet still opened at the top of the chart. On the other hand, there was "The Smurfs 2," which did poorly by the standards of both its predecessor and this summer's other family films, but which may yet be the big winner at the global box office. And on the other other hand, there was "The Spectacular Now," whose spectacular opening on just a handful of screens may ultimately mean that the biggest box office winner of all is... Shailene Woodley?

Confused? Understandable. This was the kind of weekend that confirms the famous adage of "The Princess Bride" screenwriter William Goldman that, when it comes to picking winners in Hollywood,

Denzel Washington: Whitney Houston Was 'My Girl'

Denzel Washington: Whitney Houston Was 'My Girl'
In what may be his most candid interview yet, Oscar winner Denzel Washington shares with GQ magazine the struggles he witnessed through his friendship with the late Whitney Houston.

Washington, 57, and Houston worked together on the 1996 feel-good film The Preacher's Wife, and the actor still refers to Houston as "my girl." He tells GQ, "She had done so well in recovery. And that is the toughest part about addiction. ...That was a monster drug that got ahold of her, it was a mean one. You can’t go back to that one. Nobody beats that."

Houston was found dead in her Beverly Hilton Hotel room on Feb. 12, 2012, the night before the Grammy Awards. She was 48.

The stars of Whitney Houston's final movie say the singing superstar was a "nurturing" figure to the rest of the cast.

Whitney plays the mother of three sisters trying to make their way in the music industry in the remake of the 1970s movie of the same name.
