This movie was based on the 1987 murder of Deana Hubbard Wild by Virginia Rearden McGinnis and her husband, Joe, in Big Sur, California. Wild died one day after Rearden made the first payment on a $35,000.00 life insurance policy on Wild in which Rearden was the beneficiary.
Wild died on April 2, 1987 when she fell from a cliff more than 300-foot high in Big Sur, California. She was 20-years old. Wild's death was first ruled an accident, however, Wild's mother, Bobbie Roberts, became suspicious of the events surrounding her daughter's death when an investigation uncovered an insurance policy Virginia McGinnis purchased the day before Wild's death.
