Storyline

In this quasi-mythological costume series, Hercules (in Greek Herakles), the noble bastard son of Zeus, hence hated to death by his step-mother Hera, doesn't live as an Olympian after accomplishing his Works and the Argonauts' journey, as classical myth has it, but relinquishes immortality and continues to fight both human and supernatural evil on earth, as a wanderer in and beyond Greece, usually accompanied by his human side-kick Iolaus and sometimes by dodgy Salmoneus. Countless are the challenges, either especially set up by Hera or just on his way, but he always triumphs against all odds, delivers otherwise often hopeless mortals and moves on to new adventures. Trivia

The character of Xena was inspired by Brigitte Lin's character from The Bride with White Hair (1993), and was meant to have a character arc lasting three episodes ending with her death. However producers looked ahead to a possible spin-off and decided to spare her. The three part arc on Hercules was so successful with viewers and ratings that studio execs gave the go-ahead for the Xena spin-off. See more »

Goofs

Aphrodite refers to Hercules as both "older brother" and "younger brother" several times throughout the series. See more »

Weyland the Slave: [standing up indignantly] I'm not a spy! I'm a slave!
Trojan Fugitive: We do not accept slaves in Troy.
Weyland the Slave: That's all right. I'm used to prejudice.

Still love this show!
13 November 2016 | by just_another_manic_MOMdaySee all my reviews

Probably the best live-action Hercules that there will ever be. Kevin Sorbo and Michael Hurst make the best team, bar-none. I feel absolutely privileged to have watched the magic of Kevin and Michael come alive on my TV screen growing up. I love how the screenwriters explored different mythologies throughout the series, as well, such as Norse mythology and Celtic mythology--those explorations outside of Greek mythology really added something nice to the series overall. I still watch this show on Netflix--my husband and I just finished watching the entire series a couple months ago, and I started watching it again a couple of weeks ago. (Yeah, I love the show THAT MUCH!) I really don't think there will ever be another mythology- based show as good as 'Hercules: The Legendary Journeys' ever again, seeing as how no one could ever duplicate the talent of Kevin and Michael.
