1994 Revisits: "True Lies"

by Ben Miller

Arnold Schwarzenegger has never been much of an actor. Instead he's a presence, an ideal; square-jawed, charismatic, with muscles on top of muscles. But, his biggest advantage is how aware he is of his own ridiculousness. His job is to do competent action and spout a cheesy one-liner with the bravado necessary to sell it. His greatest critical successes have leaned into these innate strengths. When paired with a good director and solid co-stars, his films work.

Everything came together with True Lies in 1994. Director James Cameron was riding high after T2: Judgment Day made all the money a movie could make in 1991. He originally entertained the idea of a Spider-Man movie starring Michael Biehn, but couldn’t make it work with 1994 technology. Instead, he went with True Lies...

‘Halloween’: Jamie Lee Curtis, Jason Blum Dish on Michael Myers’ Return

‘Halloween’: Jamie Lee Curtis, Jason Blum Dish on Michael Myers’ Return
“Halloween” fans are eagerly anticipating Jamie Lee Curtis’ return to the role of Laurie Strode, cinema’s most iconic avenging babysitter.

It turns out, they have Jake Gyllenhaal to thank for it. The actor is a family friend — Curtis refers to him as her “unofficial godson” — and he tracked her down while she was on vacation in the mountains with her husband, actor Christopher Guest, to put in a plug for David Gordon Green, the reboot’s director. Gyllenhaal urged Curtis to take Green’s call. The two had worked together on 2017’s “Stronger,” which Gyllenhaal told Curtis was the greatest experience of his professional career.

Curtis and Green hit it off immediately. Green, best known for comedies like “Pineapple Express” and dramas such as “Undertow,” reminded Curtis of John Carpenter, the director of the original 1978 “Halloween.”

“They’re both laid back and don’t take themselves too seriously,” Curtis

"True Lies" Updates

Fox continues developing a "True Lies" comedy/drama action series, adapting director James Cameron's terrorist-killing 1994 spy feature, with the studio giving the project a 'put pilot' commitment:

"...'Harry Tasker' leads a double life. While his wife 'Helen' and daughter 'Dana' believe him to be a run-of-the-mill computer salesman...

"...he is actually a 'black operative' for the covert counter-terrorism task force 'Omega Sector'..."

McG will direct the pilot from a script by Marc Guggenheim, executive produced by Cameron.

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson Are Coming Back For The Hitman's Bodyguard Sequel

For those of you who enjoyed the Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson action comedy The Hitman's Bodyguard, you'll be happy to hear that Millennium Films is developing a sequel. The sequel will be called  The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, and the two lead actors are expected to reprise their roles.

There's no word on what the plot of the film will entail, but it will obviously heavily involve the wife of Samuel L. Jackson's character, who was played by Salma Hayek in the first film. While there is no script for the movie yet, it's being described at the Cannes Film Festival as "The Good. The Bad. And the Batshit cray."

The first movie turned out being a fun and entertaining action movie. Reynolds and Jackson had great chemistry, but it will never be in the same league as buddy cop films like Lethal Weapon, True Lies, or Bad Boys.

James Cameron Slammed Online for ‘Avengers’ Criticism, but Marvel’s Kevin Feige Is Staying Positive About It

James Cameron Slammed Online for ‘Avengers’ Criticism, but Marvel’s Kevin Feige Is Staying Positive About It
James Cameron is feeling the wrath of the internet after a comment he made to IndieWire criticizing the Marvel Cinematic Universe went viral. While promoting his upcoming AMC series “James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction,” the “Titanic” and “Avatar” director said that he hopes the industry starts getting tired of the “Avengers” storyline because “there are other stories to tell.”

“I’m hoping we’ll start getting ‘Avenger’ fatigue here pretty soon,” Cameron said. “Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”

Wild Horses: How 'The Rider' Became the Breakout Movie of 2018

Wild Horses: How 'The Rider' Became the Breakout Movie of 2018
There's an epic magic-hour shot in Chloé Zhao's The Rider that's so gorgeous, every great Hollywood Western director might want to hang up their spurs. Real-life saddle bronc rider Brady Jandreau, a daredevil 20-year-old with a busted head, hand and hip, mounts a horse that could kill him. At his last rodeo, a stallion stomped on his skull. Jandreau barely survived, but his doctor's orders to never ride again are just a slower kind of death here on South Dakota's Lakota-Sioux Pine Ridge Reservation. But there he goes, galloping past the sunset.

Charles in Charge Stars Accuse Scott Baio of Sexual Abuse

Scott Baio has been accused of sexual abuse by former child actors he worked with on Charles in Charge. The #MeToo movement might have begun last October, but the fallout continues as more and more accusers find the strength to speak out. Only recently, Uma Thurman added her voice to the many women who have accused Harvey Weinstein of abuse, and the car crash on the set of Kill Bill which followed. Eliza Dushku finally was able to discuss the abuse she suffered at the hands of True Lies stunt coordinator Joel Kramer when she was a child.
