Blumhouse's Thriller Trailer Turns a Childhood Prank Into a Nightmare

Blumhouse's Thriller Trailer Turns a Childhood Prank Into a Nightmare
Blumhouse is going all in on its winning barebones production formula with the cheap-looking Thriller, which makes it extra scary by default. Its loose production values add a certain aura to this haunting tale that you would never get with a big budget horror project. Oh, and we should mention, since it's returning to theaters today, this has nothing to do with Michael Jackson's Thriller, which is playing in 3D alongside The House With a Clock in Its Walls.

Thriller is the latest low budget creeper from Blumhouse, who are gearing up to release the much more high profile Halloween sequel in theaters next month. Dallas Jackson directs Thriller, which tells of a childhood prank gone horribly wrong. You get to see that prank happen here, and the outcome will definitely turn your stomach. The dollar store production aesthetic adds a sense of realism that comes across like a snuff film.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Posts Crazy Phenomenal Hold Of -6%; Melissa McCarthy’s ‘Happytime Murders’ $10M Doa: Sunday Final

  • Deadline
Sunday Am Final: For previous Friday/Saturday update, click here. Warner Bros.’ Crazy Rich Asians drew a second weekend of $25M, down an awesome, unexpected, and uncommon 6%.

This is truly an unprecedented weekend hold for a summer movie, especially in recent years. Typically you see this type of weekend hold between a Christmas and New Year’s weekend, but you have to go back to movies like Forrest Gump (-1.5%) or The Sixth Sense (-3%).

Even more amazing, the Crazy Rich Asians second Saturday of $10.3M was the same amount that the pic made the previous Saturday, per Warner Bros.

It’s the third consecutive weekend that Warner Bros. has owned the top spot at the box office, but it’s the second weekend in row that they’ve ruled the top two spots, thanks to their China Gravity co-prod shark, The Meg, which earned $13M in its third outing,

As Aspect Reaches 40, It Retools for the New Media Age

  • Variety
Creative agency Aspect’s Throwback Thursday Facebook postings of its past work offer a fascinating historical document. They not only showcase highlights from the company’s 40 years in the movie-trailer business such as “Men in Black,” “Misery” and “Wayne’s World,” they’re also a reminder of how much the medium has changed since the days when the sonorous and instantly recognizable voice of narrator Don Lafontaine graced thousands of trailers, promos and ads.

Then and now, Aspect reigns as one of the top trailer houses in Hollywood. Back in the old days, it had a reputation as the go-to place for comedies. But, today, it prides itself on its ability to work on projects of any genre, from “Ready Player One,” “Hell Fest” and HBO’s “Westworld” to “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again,” as well as every platform, from the big screen to smartphones.

Aspect’s reel can be seen here: https://wdrv.

Can ‘Black Panther’ do what ‘The Dark Knight’ couldn’t at the Oscars?

Can ‘Black Panther’ do what ‘The Dark Knight’ couldn’t at the Oscars?
Many a Batman fan in 2008 was rooting for “The Dark Knight,” Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed second round with the Caped Crusader and the year’s top-grossing movie, to secure a berth in the best-picture race at that year’s Oscars. They weren’t the only ones. The previous year’s edition of Hollywood’s glitziest night drew only 32.9 million viewers – an all-time low. Alas, it was not to be.

The Academy, however, did alter the rules the following year to increase the probability that a well-regarded blockbuster had a chance to make the cut by expanding the Best Picture category to 10 titles – later amended to between five and 10 films. As a result, there has been a boost for sci-fi and action competitors. But since 2002, when the original “Spider-Man” kicked off the ongoing run of Marvel superhero franchises, no comic-book adventure has made the cut.

Oscar Winners Nominated at the 2018 Emmys

Oscar Winners Nominated at the 2018 Emmys
With more and more movie stars transitioning to television, the number of previous Oscar winners in contention at the Emmys continues to grow. Several Academy Award champs number among the 2018 Emmy nominees that were announced on Thursday, July 12.

One of the most recent Oscar victors in the Emmy lineup is Allison Janney, who won Best Supporting Actress earlier this year for playing an acid-tongued mother in “I, Tonya.” Now she contends for Best Comedy Actress for her small-screen role as another flawed matriarch in “Mom,” which has already brought her two Emmys in the supporting category (2014 and 2015). Janney is a perennial favorite of the TV academy, with 14 total nominations and 5 additional wins.

Janney’s predecessor in the Oscar Supporting Actress category, Viola Davis (“Fences” in 2016), missed out on a Best Drama Actress nom for “How to Get Away with Murder” this year. But she nonetheless showed up in Best Drama

Robert Zemeckis’ ‘Welcome to Marwen’ Changes Tones in New Trailer

One of the few directors who is able to still wrangle a decent-sized budget for Hollywood studio fare that doesn’t involve capes or anything of the ilk, Robert Zemeckis’ formally inventive films are still ones to marvel at. Following his return to live-action with the trio of Flight, The Walk, and Allied, his next project looks is a mix of that realm and a healthy dose of motion capture.

Welcome to Marwen, another remake of a documentary from the director, is based on the 2010 film Marwencol, and after a wild first trailer, a second one has now arrived that shifts tones to an entirely inspirational one, perhaps fitting for its new December holiday release date. The story follows Steve Carell’s character in the true story of a man who was beaten into a coma, leaving memory loss, he then constructs a fantastical World War II-era world of dolls that fight the Nazis,
