Jon Lovitz refers to Pruitt Taylor Vince, overweight sidekick of Bill McKinney, who both play the "hick" robbers, as "pig boy". Bill McKinney played the "squeal like pig, boy" rapist in Deliverance (1972). Also, in the first film, Billy Crystal makes a reference to Deliverance about different cowboys but with the same job as Vince and McKinney.
The picture of Curly's father, Lincoln Washburn, is an image of Jack Palance from the film "Shane". Billy Crystal has said that his original inspiration for Curly was Jack Palance's role as Wilson in "Shane".
In the original draft, Billy Crystal's character "accidentally" drops his brother Glenn (Jon Lovitz) into a canyon before an oncoming stampede, killing him. Although it was scrapped after negative screen testing, the scene was eventually used in the Lion King.
