Amar and Prem are two rivals who belonging to middle-class families with no scope of future advancement. Both individually, without the knowledge of the other decide to take matters into their hands and find ways to get rich quickly. Chaos and acrimony result when both find each other at loggerheads when both arrive to win the hand of the daughter of multi-millionaire Ram Gopal Bajaj amidst considerable upheavals when Shyam, the twin brother of Ram, decides to do away with Ram and assume his identity and thus take over the estate of the Bajaj family.

In the film credits, Shakti Kapoor's name has the 'S' striked out and is spelt with a 'T,' thus making it 'Thakti'. This is because Shakti's character Crime Master Gogo cannot say 'S'. He replaces 'S' with 'T.' Thus instead of saying 'Namaste' his character says 'Namate.' Further, his character Crime Master Gogo is said to be the nephew of the great Indian villain Mogambo essayed by the late Amrish Puri in the film Mr. India. Aamir Khan and Rishi Kapoor discussed the production of Andaz Apna Apna in a dialogue in the film Damini which released in 1993. In the scene where Anand Akela shows Prem his token for the interview, Prem places it on the table. All three characters are shown to move away at the end of the scene, but Anand doesn't pick his token back. He reveals much later that he has given up hope of marriage to Raveena, but its only after their attempt to foil the plans of other hopefuls. See more
